Dear Listers

Some great news for those with ancestors from the Island of Faial. The
book Familia Faialenses by Marcelino Lima has been scanned by Google for
some time but we were unable to read it page-by-page. Now thanks to the
University of Michigan we can view the book and even make JPG's and I
believe PDF's of it! This book can be viewed on the site:
www.hathitrust.org. Once the page loads you can type in the name Marcelino
Lima in the left-hand search box (there are three). When the next page
comes up the book Familia...is at the top, click on "full view" and the
book will start appearing. To the left are sections you can click on to
navigate OR you can use the arrows at the bottom of the page. The arrows
are used the same as the CCA Site; the two in the middle navigate
page-by-page, the two outside take you to the 1st or last page of the
book. This book is all in Portuguese but the genealogical part is pretty
easy to follow. Just remember that "n" next to a date means naceu-- born,
"m" next to a date is morreu/morto--died, and "c" stands for
casou--married.

Good luck!

Rosemarie

Rosemarie; This appears to be a wonderful genealogical addition for those
of us with families from Faial. I have been skimming the book but; so far
have not found my line (Faria, Catherina). Can you tell me if this book
contains only the noble lines of Faial or ALL the lines of Faial? Thanks
much, Sam in Maz

p.s. I had to type in the url: www.hathitrust.org into my browser in order
for it to work.

Dear Sam

I don't know about the noble lines. It gives a "notas" section in the back
of each "name" section which explains alot. It usually tells who the first
of the name was who came to the Island and where they came from but that's
it.

T&T,

Karlushko posted a work around for those not able to view it.  You may have to try different browsers too.  I'm sure as more people start using it, they will post more work arounds.

Sam--Good Luck. I would take it sentance by sentance and put it into the
translation part of Google. It may be pretty premitive but you probably
cana get the gist of it.
