My Grandfather's name was Francisco Vieira Mello (deMello), born in
Lajes do Pico, Azores, Portugal. There is some reason to believe that
his father's name was also Francisco Vieira Mello (deMello). The
birthdate for my Grandfather is 3/18/1859. He married Catherine
(Catarina) d'conceicao Xavier. The birthplace I have for her is
Silveira do Pico, Azores, Portugal, birthdate 10/26/1860). I do have
some information on her.

Spent a beautiful 2 weeks in the Azores in 2004. Never found any
relatives but I am sure I may have sat next to one or two of them
without knowing it.

Any information greatly appreciated;

Shirley,

Did any of your Mellos live in Gloucester, Mass?  One of my Great Great Aunts, Serina, married Joseph Mello and raised her family in Gloucester.

Thanks, Dolores

Hello Shirley,

Where did your Grandmother's Xavier family settle in the US (if they did)?

We visited the Azores in 2008 and had a wonderful time. Fortunately, we
were able to meet our Bettencourt family members in Terceira though not any
of our other lines. Good luck with your research.

My grandfather settled in San Luis Obispo, California. The story goes
that his father came to work in the gold fields around Placerville and
then sent for his son (my grandfather)) Some think that they had the
same name - Francisco Vieira Mello. dropped the de when they came.
My grandfather had 6 children - Antone, Francisco, George, Maria, Enos
and Manuel. They have all passed. I believe there are only 5
grandchildren still alive, only 2 with the last name of Mello. I am
the only one who does not live in California.

Thank you for replying.

Shirley, I live in San Luis Obispo, California. Let me know if I can help.
My husband was born in SLO, do you still have family here?

I have a number of pictures and documents related to Brebes, that I am still
trying to get scanned and sent for one of their family members. I am slow
but I eventually get to them.

BTW I changed computers and have been unable to transfer my address book, so
I'd appreciate it if those I've emailed with would resend their addresses
and the names I promised to look up. Then, maybe I can send what I have.

Ronnie French, Researching: Jacinto da Costa from San Jose, Ponta Delgada,
San Miguel, Azores and wife Marianna Lucianna, diocese of Agra, living on
Alegria St. Parents of Jacinto: Manuel and Laureanna Joaquina. Parents of
Marianna: Manual Francisco Liborio and Francisca Candida. Children who
immigrated to Hawaii in 1883 w/Jacinto and Marianna: Manual, Jacinto,
Maria/Mary, my ggrandmother(Nana), Paulo. The other side are from Madeira.

Thank you for replying.

Shirley,

I was just going through some of our family history this weekend.  My grandfather (edward mello) His brother (james) and has 2 other brothers and oldest sister Elvita grew up outside Cambridge.  Elvita who is in her late 80's has a lot of great Mello pictures, post cards and letters from the late 1800 and early 1900. I believe my great grandfather Fransico was married 2x.(this was a shock to my grandfather) His first wife died at 32 of a heart attack. He then remarried and had my grandfather and his sibilings.  Will try to upload pics.

Best Regards

In my file of Portuguese families in the Sacramento area are a couple of dozen Mello families.  The California death register lists over 30 named Mello or Melo.

Nate,

According to the 1930 census Edward J b. 1927 and Elvita born 1922 ,  Mello's parents were Manuel S  and Mary C. If these are the correct people, then this is the second marriage record, making Francisco the great great grandfather

It is believed that there were 3 sons who came.  My grandfather stayed in California and the other two went back east.

Lionel Rocha Holmes:

I am Jeffrey Tooker.  I am grandson to Manual Mello, "MANUEL MELLO (Manuel Antonio d'Areia Mello)" d. Sacramento 1958, and of the "http://www.portugueseancestry.com/genresources/pioneers_mn.cfm" site.  I have sent a check to the webmaster for membership and am awaiting his reply.

In reading the "Pioneers" I have come across "Jose Leal de Roza".  This is of great interest, because acording to my mothers oral history Manuel Mello's mother was,  DE LINO-LEAL, ISABEL M.
b. 1846.  Her father was Leal-Da Rosa, MANUAL (Manoel).  Manoels wife was DE LINO, ISAURA MARIA.  I have subsequently found that Leal-Da Rosa, MANUAL (Manoel) had a son Jacinto Leal-Da Rosa.  Who took the name of Jacinto "Jesse" Leal-Rose in this country.  Jacinto was born in 1855 and died in Hollister in 1917.  He seems to have come directly From the Azores to Misson San Jose in Alameda county.  What we have is a line compiled by my cousin Sharon Nunes Hopingardner in Hollister and myself.  It is documented in this country.  We do not have documentation for the ties from "MANUEL MELLO (Manuel Antonio d'Areia Mello)"  and Jacinto "Jesse" Leal-Rose  to Leal-Da Rosa, MANUAL (Manoel).  I was wondering if you might put me in touch with someone who may be of help.  All of this goes back to Piedade, Pico 1840-1855.

When I was about 13 we use to visit my cousin Sharon and her family.  She was Leal-Rose/Fontes/ Nunes then.  So there was a tie somewhere between Sacramento and Hollister.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Jeffrey Tooker

My wife and I took a trip through California last week. I shot the attached photographs but I don't have an interest in the Mello/Melo lineage.
