Good morning everyone.

My name is Joe Costa.  I live in Norfolk, MA.  I’m new to this group.  For a number of years, like the rest of you, I have been researching my Azorean genealogy.  I understand that some people on here may trace back to the Sousa (Batata) family of Vila Franca.  Jose de Sousa (Batata) (1844-1914) was my 1st great grandfather on my mom’s side.  Her maiden name was Souza.  I would love to touch base with anyone who has more information on this family and to see how we all tie together.  My tree (Costa/Murray Family) is on ancestry.com.  You can contact me there (user name: jwcosta1) or leave a posting for me here.

Best,

Joe

Joe,
Although I don't have that family in my line (yet), a bunch of us in the group have ancestors from Vila Franca (I descend from the Furtado Lourenco line). Have you considered doing a DNA test? It helps find cousins and gives you a breakdown of your ancestry. I bet you would match with a lot of us on here!

Hi Cheryl.  My great grandmother was Maria da Gloria (Furtado) Medeiros Silva (she was married twice).  She was born (1881 in Ribeirha Grande on Sao Miguel (?sp) and died in 1969 in Plymouth, MA. I know that she has some Lawrences in her family.

Joe, I have Sousas, from east Boston in my Ancestry.  Also one of my cousins married a Costa.  I tried and couldn't find your tree, is there a way you can send me an invite?

Thank you,
Dolores Coyle

Thank you, Rick.  Which of the tests do you recommend?  Which one did most people in this group do?  I see the range in price is quite significant.
