Windows 8 crashed my computer lost lots of data.

Had a Computer Crash Lost lots of Data My back up didn't upload right the only backup that worked was from it makes me so depressed lost over 3000 people from my database, i will have to enter alt least the ones i have documents for. it is very depressing..

Thanks for the warning George! I am so sorry for all you lost! What a nightmare. I am updating my Gedcom file now to my flash drive. I try to keep it updated just in case of a computer crash or some problem. This is a good time to do it. I am always afraid of something happening to my laptop that has all of my genealogy on it.

I would recommend for you not to give up and to try and find a good computer "geek" in your area that may be able to recover all your lost data from the hard drive.  It's a matter of know how and the right tools.

George, a while ago I had a crash and had a similar problem.

I had to restart my computer in safe mode. Go to accessories. System tools. System restore. Restore my computer to an earlier time. Click next. Select a date as far back as you can.

George, I should be a tiny bit more specific. You should reset to a month or a couple of weeks previous. It should take a little while, but it should reset your system back to the date you specified. Anything between the time of the date specified and your crash will be lost, but it's not as great a loss as all your programs and info.

what little I have I can share with you - just let me know.  And don't give up trying to recover the data.  Rolling back the computer to an earlier time is a great idea if your hard drive is still spinning.  Also, for the future, check into a program called SPIN RITE.  It has already saved my Windows side once and I recommend it highly!

I  cried for 4 hours solid when this happened to me a few years back.  I now run 2 backups and have the info on both my laptop and my mini.  My son was able to restore abt. 90% of my data.  Guess he couldn't stand to see his mom cry anymore.

Thank you for your generosity, I only lost the last 3 months of work, i do have some copies and some on y sent e-mails some will be lost for ever, my 2 backups failed I was able to retrieve from my old computer a gedcom form August. it is close to 2500 people.

Did you have your backups on an external drive? Some backup programs hide the files. Look at the properties by right clicking on the folder to see if you can unhide the information in the folder. David

There is a place in New Bedford that can help you. My old computer crashed a few months ago and I kept on getting the blue screen of death. I took it to this place on Allen st and the guys there were able to recover 8 years worth of pictures, music and files for me!
