Hi everyone,

Just curious two of my great uncles were both named Manoel, was this common in Sao Jorge?

Eddie M,

No, usually if one finds two males with the same name, then the first one died before the 2nd one was born.  I said usually.  I think there are probably a couple of people on this list who may have males with the same name who both lived to adulthood, but I'd say that was the exception.

However, females were a different story.  A family can have multiple Marias that live to adulthood.  One probably went by Maria and the others probably went by their middle (usually religious) middle name.

So the name rule is that there is no hard and fast rule, just generalities.

Hi Cheri,

Both lived into adulthood. One went by his middle name Pete. Is there a record of people middle names somewhere?

Hi Eddie,

You can pick up the middle name in their marriage or on the baptism of their kids.  That's about all I can think of.
