Translation help please

Can someone please help me translate this baptism record of Joanna, Achadinha, ~1799? I can only read her father's name.

Hello,

Something is not right. The left hand page indicates a birth and baptism record from 1799...the record of interest on the right hand side, indicates a birth and baptism in 1777. Given that many of the pages are loose in this book, I would say that either the page was inserted in the wrong place, or the recorder made a typo. Regardless, I cannot fully make out the mothers name. I've been looking for the marriage of Gaspar de Medeiros.

The date is 10 May 1777. Yes the record before is 1799 and the record on the reverse side of the page is 1800. I would guess the record was discovered missing and was entered in the next available page.

it shows 1777.  The pages are all consecutively numbered. But if you go down to the last line you should be able to read that they couldn't find the original record by sentence of the Rev. Vicar Joao Bento Pacheco presented by the baptised  because the original record cannot be found.  So Joana herself brought the order to have her birth record entered in the baptisms books, probably when it was found out there wasn't one in 1799.  So she was born in 1777.

Here is his first marriage to Angela Ignacia de Bitencur...maybe Betancur...or Bettencourt.  I've seen the both used in modern times.

It says she's natural of N. Senhora da Piedade but baptized in this parish of Nossa Senhora do Rosario and gives the dates mentioned above.  According to this she wouldn't be showing up in Rio's records.

Thanks for the name Bettencourt...didn't see that at all!  I don't read Portuguese so the rest of the record is a mystery to me also.  What village, church? I see Rio De Janeiro.   And can I push my good luck and ask to translate the grandparents name?

No, I'm not working on Gaspar's line, but I do have interests in Azorean emigration to Brazil.

As far as Angela's grandparents, you would probably have to find the marriage of Angela's parents; or you may get lucky and find it on her baptism, if the years go back that far. I doubt the grandparents are going to be listed.

As for Angela's parents, they're Manuel da Sa' Bettentcourt (bitencourt, or variations), and Theresa de Jesus.
I can't read portuguess either, I can only understand certain words...but, as Mara indicated, Joanna is a native of Brazil, but was baptized in this particular church.

Thanks.  My paternal grandmother, Rosa Cipriana de conceicoa de Amaral, emigrated sometime is the mid to late 1960's. And my paternal aunts and uncle [Amaral] emigrated to Sao Paulo and Rio probably between 1930's and 1950's. How would I serch for them? I've only just started this geneology journey in Achadinha, S. Miguel, Azores.

Emigration leaving the Azores is in the passsaportes. Go to tombo.pt, click on the English flag, then scroll down the left column looking for the word Azores. Click that and the passaportes are up front.

Goto familysearch.org they have the actual immigration cards, with pictures, for Rio de Janeiro 1900-1965, and Sao Paulo, 1902-1980.

I would suggest that you become familiar with familysearch...they have many collections available to view online, and if not, you can order the microfilm.

the passport records atop at 1938.  Are there records IN the Azores.  I know my grandmo went to brazil after 1964 but think her children  went some time before [ maybe the 30's, 40's 0r 50's].  Is this a dead end?

OK, it looks like they uploaded the passaportes for the 3 ports up to 1938/39. I believe the port of Ponta Delgada goes up to 1954. I'll find my notes and get back to you after lunch.

Here is what the Biblioteca of Ponta Delgada told me about the passaportes. They told me this around 2002-2005. It does NOT agree with what they uploaded to the Internet.

District archive of Horta: 1836‑1939; since 1856 they are indexed and give the towns or parishes

of birth.

District archive of Angra do Heroismo: 1775‑1818, 1844‑1845, 1857‑1924.

District archive of Ponta Delgada:

Existing: 1875 May‑1883 Oct; 1894 Nov ‑ 1908 Oct; 1910 Jan‑1920 Jan; 1922 Sep‑1939

Dec; 1950 Feb‑1953 Mar.  All records before and in the gaps are missing.  Available only at

library.

You will have to hire a researcher for the Feb 1950- Mar 1953 records. And you'll need to understand that you will pay the researcher, but s/he may come up with nothing.
