Hi friends - I found an article about Jose Pimentel on another board, but it may be a clue to something I've been trying to sort out.  I have a mysterious "Sebastiao Jose Queiro Pimentel" (b ~1813, d 1892 Lomba, Flores) in my tree, but have not found his birth or many others with the name Quiero.  I do know he died 1892 in Lomba, I have that Obito.  Now I'm wondering if he is somehow related to a Pimentel from Ribeira Do Barqueiro, and that how Queiro became part of his name?  Just a thought.  I had not previously searched the Frequesia of Santa Cruz believing my Sebastiao came from the southern part of the island.

So the article lead me to Jose Pimentel, born 1813 in Ribeira Do Barqueiro, Flores, and I "think" I've found his baptismo.  Could someone help me with the translation - it's one of those "hard to read" ones (ugh).  I'm not even sure I am in the right year on this one...

It's the 4th one down on the left page:

http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/FLR-SC-SANTACRUZ-B-1826-1841/FLR-SC-SANTACRUZ-B-1826-1841_item1/P123.html

I see:

Jose, son of Jose Manuel Pimentel ? and Maria ?

(are they from this frequesia or somewhere else?)

Paternos Antonio Jose Pimentel B?? and Maria ? Furtado?

Maternos  ??? and Maria Freitas?

Padrinho Jose ?? and his wife Antonia Jose e Maria ??

Born..at this point I see a lot of numbers written out but can't make them out, so I'm not sure what it is saying.

Thanks for any help you have time to give.

Mary

Hi Mary,

That's a difficult record, but this is what I think I see:

Joze filho de Joze Ma[noel?] Pimentel Canellas e sua m.er Ro.a Maria P......
cho [asigna?]do  emos Vinte quatro dias dad.o mez, e anno. Foi Padrinho Joze
....................... dos Reis  testemunhos Antonio Jose e Manoel F................  que
para constar fiz este termo era et supra

Canellas and Botacao aren't names I'm familiar with, so there's a good chance I'm transcribing them incorrectly.  I saw "Anna de brita", but I looked again after rereading your note, and think you're right that the name is "Freitas"

hope this helps,

Linda

thank you Linda - at least now I know it is 1835, which seems to be the right year.

Querio is seen in Flores in combination with Coelho and Pimentel, Rodrigues and Valadao

Batacão is seen across the island. Here it is referencing the paternos in the baptism:

António José Pimentel [f.º de António José Pimentel Batacão e de
Mariana Furtado] c. 1813.10.10 c. Maria Úrsula [f.ª de Francisco
António Pedreiro e de Ana Úrsula].

What you list as Canellas is Cancela . The only time it appears in the Flores e Corvo marriage book is here:

Santa Cruz
Lourenço José Miguel [f.º de Manuel José Miguel Cancela e de Maria
de Jesus] c. 1843.06.17 c. Francisca Laureana de Jesus [n. Cedros, Santa
Cruz das Flores, f.ª de Inácio Vicente de Mendonça e de Maria de
Jesus].

Mary,

I have found researching Flores over the last twenty years that the surnames are not always recorded the same way on all documents. The alcunha part ( Queiro, Batacao, etc) is often left off some records.

The parents are sometimes recorded wrong also. Not surprising 70 or 80 years later , often in a a different town.

26 Sep 1892  Lomba

Sebastiao Pimentel 79 yrs

widower of Maria da Trindade

legitimate son of Jose Pimentel Queiro and  Sebastiana de Jesus

Looking through the Flores marriage book, I can not find any marriage for those parents or for Sebastiao Pimentel and Maria da Trindade.

The place they reference is Ribeira dos Barqueiros, part of the parish of the town of Santa Cruz

Hi Eric. I really appreciate the help you've given me several times over the years. Yeah, Sebastiao is my mystery-man, I just can't seem to find any certainty in my Pimentel line beyond him.  I've looked at the marriage book (kindle version) till I'm cross eyed, but just can't find him or his parents.  If he was 79(ish) when he died, that would put his birth around 1813, so now I'm going to start looking at the Santa  Cruz baptismos and see if I find anything around that time, +/- 10 years.  Those particular records are pretty hard to read, but who knows...maybe I'll find some clues.  Wish me luck!

Thanks again,
Mary Pimentel-Wheeler

This seems the most likely match for the Sebastiao and Maria da Trindade in the obito.

Lomba

José Sebastião Pimentel [26 anos, f.º de Sebastião José Pimentel e de
Maria da Trindade do Coração de Jesus] c. 1886.08.19 c. Maria
Gonçalves de Freitas [18 anos, f.ª de João António Gonçalves e de Isabel
da Trindade do Coração de Jesus].

Mary,

This is the marriage of this Jose's parents

 from Santa Cruz.

José Tomás Pimentel [f.º de António José Pimentel Batacão e de Mariana Furtado]
c. 1832.01.23
c. Rosa Maria [f.ª de pai incógnito e de Ana de Freitas Lajedo, mulher de António de Freitas Podrigão, ausente].

Mary,

Here is the Lomba obito for, Maria da Trindae, the wife of Jose Pimentel Queiro

This may  help to get a positive identification on your mystery man by her parents.
