Hi,

I just received my great grandfather's immigration & naturalization papers from USCIS (almost 10 months).  It gives the date of arrival to New York as 30 May 1894 on the Peninsular.  Another document states his arrival was 10 June 1894.  He was from Topo, Sao Jorge and says he left from Calheta, Sao Jorge

Where is best place to look for him?  I do have Ancestry.

Lisa, I would look at the Angra passport list around those dates and see if it lists his parents and confirms his place of birth. Then, you can go to the Topo Church records and go from there.

Access the Passaportes (which are on the CCA) through Tombo.pt. Once you are on the Azores page, the passaportes links will be on the main screen, in the middle.

It took the Peninsular about 2 weeks to get to the east coast. I'd start with 9 June 1894 and work my way back in time. Yeah, it's impossible for the ship to make it in a day, but I wouldn't want to miss my ancestors either. It's probably only 10 extra minutes of looking.
