2 weeks from today I will be in Ponta Delgada looking for genealogy books! I am interested in purchasing an original copy of RR's book for example. Assuming it's affordable as I'm running out of cash with all the DNA testing I've been doing.

What other books are worth purchasing?

And finally ...where are these special bookstores? Google couldn't find them but I'm sure there are a few of you that can point me in the right direction.

Thank you :)

The Rodrigo Rodrigues book is supposed to be out-of-print but I am told that there are a few copies left at the Instituto Cultural de Ponta Delgada. You can probably find them on line and e-mail/telephone them. They are very heavy volumes and probably cost around $600.00.

Origens Geograficas dos Acoreanos by Carlos Melo Bento might be helpful. It is available for 20 euros at his office in PD, Rua da Cruz, 45.

I always look for genealogy books when I go to the Azores and unfortunately since Livraria Gil closed, the pickings have been few. Even Sol e Mar has very little by way of genealogy.
Good luck!

John

Liveira Gil closed? I believe that is where I found most my books.

RR is out of print. Volume 1 was.around $50 or $60 U.S. Dollars. The whole set was around $600.

Manita, you may find select volumes of Insulana of interest. Volume IV of Saudades da Terra by Gaspar Frutuoso is about S.Miguel, but I don't think that is sold separate.

Angela,

I've seen the Saudade da Terra series of 5 or 6 books. They call each one a volume. Volume IV is about Sao Miguel. I've never seen 3 volumes of volume IV. I don't know what you meant by that.

And before someone does a search and finds out, yes, Volume IV on Sao Miguel was translated into English by Edna Phillip Kerns. Edna died in 2009 and the book is not available. Checking WorldCat could be helpful.

I borrow Saudade from the NYU library all the time - Volume IV has three separate books - I, II, and III. I think it's book III that includes a handy index of first names, last names, and place names. I'm pretty much the only person who borrows these books at NYU.

Ok that must be what Angela was referring to. I've never seen the index. Guess Edna translated the main volume.

You can get the portuguese pdf versions on line via google for all the volumes of Saudade da Terra.  I've got them all.  Here's the link:

Saudades da Terra is divided into 6 Livros (books) and until a few years ago, Book IV (S. Miguel), the largest of the books, was divided into 3 volumes. (So the complete set was 8 volumes long). The most recent edition, slipcased, is 6 volumes long. Edna, of happy memory, translated the first volume of Book IV.

Just received this email response from them:

I picked up the entire set of Saudades da Terra about 20 years ago at Sol Mar for about one hundred dollars. It's worth checking there and could be less expensive. For many years now I have looked for RR entire set but was only able to buy volume 1 from a rare book dealer in London. The entire set will turn up one day and hopefully at a reasonable cost.
