QUERY - CA: Looking for Pasteis de Nata

Posted by: "Angela Costa" angela...@autodesk.com

Wed Nov 7, 2007 8:01 am (PST)

Hello - I'm looking for a bakery that makes past€ ¦éis de nata somewhere between the Bay Area and Sacramento. I was told that there is a bakery in Thornton that makes them, but I can't find who they are.

Thank you in advance for your help!
Angela

You would think with so many Portuguese in Sacramento that there would be a bakery or butcher here. But I dont think we have anything here besides the church.

Angela,
I do not believe Thorton has a Portuguese bakery - I go to Church there periodically.  It is a one horse town with an almost non existent main street, so I think I would have spotted it; but I could be wrong.
I have been to one in Escalon and to two others in Turlock, in case you are interested.  You may be able to Google them.
Jack

The Portuguese store, Luso Mercardo, in San Leandro
gets their pastry from 9 Island Bakery in Petaluma.
They have nata, coconut, bean, and others too.

Hi All-
Where's Thornton located? There is--or soon will be--a Portuguese
Bakery/Restaurant in Orland near Chico. My sister who lives near Chico
tells me: "The bakery near here WAS called Sweets Pluzs (or
Plusz?) located in Orland. It is now closed because the owner is building
a restaurant that will be a Portuguese restaurant. Not sure when that
will open - you might google the name. The woman does catering - I
forgot her name right now. I think the owner (her first name is Maria) might be
making holiday pastries somehow...."

I plan to move to Chico in the next year or so. There is a Portuguese Cultural
Community Center in the town.

How about Hiser bakery in Hayward, at Mission and Llewelling. Their stuff is sold in supermarkets around the Bay area.

Yes, Hiser has been around for a long time. I find
their sweet bread dry; however, their fresh buns are
wonderful. Also, the "cookies" they make have various
flavors. My favorite "cookie" is made by 5 Islands
Bakery. Depending on your history, we all have
different tastes for food and mine leans toward the
products from 5 Islands Bakery. (No,I am not on their
take!). Celeste, Hayward, CA

Guida,
Thornton is about 8-10 miles northwest of Lodi (southwest of Sacramento by around 30 miles).  It is off interstate 5 on the edge of the delta.  It is in a very nice setting, but there is nothing much to the town.  About 20 years ago or so, the catholic church there gained notoriety for the crying stature of our Lady of Fatima.  Since then, around the third week of October (honoring her last appearance in Fatima, Portugal on an Oct 13th), Thornton has, and someone correct me if I am wrong, the largest Portuguese celebration in the USA.  It includes an outdoor mass, a nighttime candlelight procession throughout the streets of Thronton where the rosary is recited multiple times with thousands of people walking behind the statue of our Lady of Fatima.  Novenas (special prayers) are said throughout the week.  Two bullfights (six bulls in each) are held on two separate days in the bullfight arena behind the church.  Professional bullfighters are brought in from Portugal, Azores and other areas.
I attended the one last month.  Portuguese from all over the state (and other states) arrive in motor homes and greyhound buses. Many of those from outside of the area stay for one week to participate in the events.  There must have been 500-700 motor homes and buses.  Thousands of people march in the procession.  The Portuguese priest, in a vehicle equipped with loud speakers, rides behind the statue.  He says the first half of each Our Father/Hail Mary and the crowd responds with the second half of each prayer.  This all performed in total darkness except for a spot light on the statue while it is carried throughout the streets and the lighted candle each participant is holding.

I'm not sure where the largest (by attendance) Portuguese celebration is held, but some very big ones are held throughout California.  This indeed includes Thornton, plus Gustine, Pismo Beach and others.  Also, I am sure that some one can name a few in Mass.

The Holy Ghost feast in Fall River hosts in the vicinity of 100,000 each year.  Also the Santo Christo feast usually gets as many with a 20 or 30 thousand contingent from Canada

The New Bedford feast is called the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament and they claim it is the largest in the world. It is a lot of fun, great food, wine and entertainment.
