I only know of the one in Santa Clara on the El Camino. Good stuff and great people! When we are in the area that's where we stop.

There seem to be 2 bakeries in Turlock (a city near Modesto):

1) 842 North Golden State Blvd.

2) 127 4th St.

I've only been to the first one shown above. But, I don't know if they have malasadas.

There are 2 Portuguese bakeries in Turlock and 1 in Escalon. Also there meat markets in Manteca and Tracy that carry some baked goods. I hope one of these has Malasadas for you.

No malasadas ~X( at wits' end but I found out that L & L Hawaiian BBQ has them.  I heard they are good so I may have to go with them.  Lots of places in Bay Area but I don't have anyone to pick them up for the Reunion.

Check with the Stockton Portuguese Club and Hall. They meet on the the second or third Thursday(?) of the month. I was born in Stockton and they would know what is where.

Silva Bakery is in Hayward, about an hour west of Modesto/Stockton area. The owner/operator is a Silva immigrant from Azores. He and his son just created and sent a nice variety box of goodies to my step-dad for his 80th birthday in Idaho.  They ship most places.

Hi,

A little off the genealogy topic, but I have question about malasadas. When I was growing up, I never heard of malasadas. We had filhos, fried dough rolled in sugar. I didn’t hear about malasadas until we went to Hawaii. My family is from the southern Alameda County area of California. Is there actually a difference in the recipe or is it a difference in the name?

My cousin, who was born in Faial and is in her 60's had never heard of malasadas either.  She knew them as Filhos.

Hawaii was heavily settled by people from Sao Miguel in the Azores and by people from Madeira.  Both places call the fried dough malasadas.  It seems that the other islands call them filhos.  Same thing, though.

I grew up on filhos and love Leonard's on Oahu (Honolulu). They aren't quite the same. My Graciosa grandmother used forks to "string" the dough out and cooked them rather well done. Malasadas are square and not fried as much. At least that's my experience....

Katherine thank you so much for your info.  M&S does not make malasadas :( sad but I will call the others and check them out.  Although maybe at M&S they call them something different.  I am going to take a ride next week that way so I will check all of them out personally to see what they have.  Would like to pick up some sweet bread and portuguese cookies too!

Hi Karen,

Have you tried calling or visiting Rosa's Bakery in Escalon?  The owner is from Sao Jorge, Azores and also owns the Portuguese bakery in Hanford.  I highly recommend this bakery and they also carry Sao Jorge cheese!  (Although I'm currently afflicted with a gouda cheese addiction from Oakdale Cheese Co.'s gouda.)

Rosa's Bakery
2251 Jackson Ave

EscalonCA 95320
(209) 838-7111
I've driven by Nine Islands Portuguese Bakery in Riverbank but they were closed when I stopped.  They close early so call for their hours.

Nine Islands Portuguese Bakery
2761 Patterson Rd
Riverbank, CA 95367
Phone: (209) 869-6277
There's also a listing for one in Turlock, but I've not tried that one yet:
M & S Portuguese Bakery
(209) 632-4035
127 4th St, Turlock, CA
Lastly, there's a listing for a Portuguese bakery in Hilmar but again, I've not been to that one either.
Hope this helps,
