Lewis Thomas b. abt 1821

Hello, I have recently learned I am Portuguese! Learning my 3rd Grandfather Lewis Thomas was born in the Azores abt 1821. Immigrated to the US before 1862, because his son Joesph was born in Gloucester MA abt 1862. This is my first attempt to connect with Azores genealogy any help and or tips would be gratefully accepted.

Ken R,

He will be Luis Tomas in Portuguese records. To research him, you need the island and the freguesia (fregh-Z-ah) in there. All of Europe is organized on the town level.

Oh! Luis Tomas! I also just found on ancestry.com his Father was Joesph and his Mother's name was Frances Louisa!

I will check out the leads you gave me.....tomorrow :)

Beware of stuff on Ancestry. Make sure you check the sources. Anyone born, lived, and died in the Azores went by Portuguese names, not American ones. So the father would be José Tomas and Francisca Louisa, possibly.

Francisca Luisa, not Francisca Louisa! (Sorry, I know a Louise and the "o" just comes out sometimes!)
