Alcunha meaning

Hi all,

 

We had a recent discussion about a surname with a number “Quarenta” which was interesting.

 

I came across a family that used the name Raposo Quintanilha. Quintanilha is listed as a family name in Guill’s History of the Azores.

What is the meaning of this name and is it a derivative of a number?  I know quinta is fifth in latin. Is there a connection?

What I meant was there any connection with the name Quintanilla and the
ordinal number for fifth.

In S. Miguel "Quintanilha" dates back to the early 18th century, the family "Velho Quintanilha" being possibly the most prominent one. although I don't know its full history, in the continent it dates even earlier.
"Quinta" as well as fifth can also mean a "farm" described in my dictionary as a "rural property". In a lighter note it is also the 5th speed in a car.
From my experience we called a quinta a property which was usually well walled and accessible by a door housing a vineyard and/or a fruit grove.
Just my two cents worth.

The Quintanelha name is very important and goes all the way back to
almost the beginning of Sao Miguel. It is a noble family name and is
linked with the most important families on Sao Miguel. It is not an
Alcunha. I am not sure if it has meaning but I would guess that
Hermano is pretty close, "Quinta" as well as fifth can also mean a

"farm" described in my dictionary as a "rural property".

Every time I was in Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, we would go to my families
quinta for a gathering to eat at least once a visit. It was surrounded by a

I am assisting a lady whose great grandparents  were Joseph Sodre and Rosa [Augusta],
of Santa Cruz .
 
He had 2 sisters , Ameila Marshall of Lowell and Mrs. Laurentinha Bettencourt of Santa Cruz , and a brother Mario  Sodre of Santa Cruz . 
 
 
Their son Manuel and wife Armandina [Sousa ] came to Lawrence  , Mass. 1954 then moved to Lowell 1956 where Manuel deceased 1972 .
 
Children  of Manuel and Armandina :
 
One of their sons was born as Manuel Joseph Santos at Lawrence ?, he returned to
Graciosa , was married to Lillian [Furtado ] and returned to U.S., where his dau. resides .
 
Manuel  Santos had also 4 brothers ,Frank Sodre,Jose S. Sodre,John Sodre, and Marcos Sodre .
 
Manuel Santos had  1 sister , Mrs. Jose [Adalina ] Francis of Lawrence in 1972.  
 
 
Because only Manuel had the last name of Santos I suspect  a prior marriage of the father to a Santos Lady .
 
 
Any additional info. would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Daniel:

The  name Amelia Marshall caught my eye.  I have an Amelia Marshall in my husband's line.  The name was Machado originally.  She died in Boston 1906. 

 I don't know if she had any sisters.  She came from Sao Miguel and had several children, One was  Domingos Moniz Machado and his bro, Clement Marshall.  Clement was naturalized and changed from Machado to Marshall.  Domingos always kept the Moniz Machado.  I have not found the other syblings.

I didn't think there would be a connection, but you never know.

Armandina Ascencao de Sousa Sodre, Francisco Augusto Sodre, Joao de Sousa Sodre, Marcos de Sousa dos Costa Sodre, Jose dos Santos Sodre.  It first says they are disembarking in Boston.  They are listed as aliens.

According to Rodrigo Rodrigues, Genalogias de S. Miguel e Santa Maria (Chapter 105: 1:1) the Quintanilhas begin with João de Torres, from Aragon, ( see Frutuoso Cap.º 92.º do Liv.º IV), living in 1557 in  Ribeira Grande and his wife Joana Quintanilha, both of whom were deceased by 4 Oct 1600.

Hi Carlos,

I am a few Sodres from Graciosa as well.

I have a Isabel Sodre who married Manuel Correia de Mello on 12 Nov
1690 in Santa Cruz, Graciosa.

Her parents were Francisco Nunes and Isabel Sodre.

I also have a Diogo Vaz Sodre who married Biolonaja da Cunha. His
parents were Vasco Gil Sodre and Beatriz Goncalves da Silva.
There is also a Catharina Luis Sodre who was married to Joao Pais
Coelho. Her parents were Francisco Dias Pombal and Maria Luis.

Another is Pedro de Conde Sodre. He was married to Catharina da Souza.
Their son was Joao de Souza Netto, born abt. 1684 in Nossa Senhora
Luz, Graciosa.

Let me know is there are any connections.

It seems that Google is “doing something”…

Anyway please try the left part of the web page were says contact next to the little envelope with a pencil and try to click on it. I suppose a new page will open and you start with a research page… please let me know if it works.
