Hi Guys,

Just been reading the Brisbane Times, and they mention the Airport Tunnel Walk is on today. Would be excellent to see a few pix!

It's still on AFAIK, and it says booking is recommended, but implies that  you can just show up there

Good photos.

The views from some of those overpasses are amazing.

Whilst the new signs aren't entirely agreeable, they're a lot better than many of the signs on East-West Arterial and the ICB. I would suggest that they're on par with many of the 1990s signs seen in NSW.

Hi Trent,

I like some of the designs you did, and they're all better than what's already on the ground. Though I think there's some spacing issues on some of them, but I think some of that has to do with the complexity of some of the junctions.

It might be time for some of us to take a route, redesign the signs, and then present a case to someone at TMR as to why the existing signs are confusing and non-standard and offer some alternative ideas. Or even go as far as asking for some work :)

Hi all

Yes it's me, back from self-imposed exile!

For a long while I have resisted the urge to complain about the terrible signs going up on Brisbane's new roads. Unfortunately I can't stay silent any longer. The signs installed by BrisConnections in/around Airport Link are absolutely horrendous. As you have seen in the photos just about everything is wrong -- font sizes, spacing, layout... and what the heck is with the ugly posts? We do not get category 5 cyclones here every year!

I have started putting together an alternative. The link below outlines my strategy for signposting along Lutwyche Rd post-Airport Link. I hope to put up my ideas for the mainline tunnel and the massive Bowen Hills and Kedron interchanges soon.

As always, all comments and feedback are welcome!

Regards
Trent

Totally agree with Paul. Good job RMS don't need as much help designing signs as Imageshack is blocked :D

Thanks guys.

I actually submitted schemes to the former head of the metropolitan district. He was interested but said there was nothing he could do apart from cover plate existing signs. No money.

I also contacted BCC re signage around the Go Between Bridge however they were satisfied because the signs were designed by a member of an engineering association. Following their logic accountants could not have been responsible for the Enron collapse.

I this case BrisConnections are responsible for erecting the signs. QMR has to sign off on them but as we've seen there are issues around training (TraSiCAD) and quality control processes.

It's so easy to make a crap looking sign in Trasicad. Doing an off the shelf automated sign gives some very ugly results, and it actually takes a lot of patience and work to get something to RTA or Vicroads standard.

Meanwhile, you can knock a nice AD up in less than 20 min using any vector graphic package such as Illustrator or CorelDraw

Photoshop would be no good in an industrial environment though.

True. Maybe an Adobe-developed program would be nice for them, as well as some precautionary measures added to block bad designs.

It would also be nice to return to the road name-less signage, however after 20 years I don’t think many people would be as ready for such a change as we are......

I agree Tyler.

As for a program customised for vectors for sign design, a chopped up version of the open source vector program Inkscape  would be ideal, and it's got less shit to contend with than the other programs and produces a nice design too.

The reality is you can throw whatever technology at a problem but people need to be shown how to use it *properly* for it to be effective. As annoying as TraSiCAD is to use, when used by a competent person it works fine. The RTA use it for all of their signs. People and process.

Totally agree.

In my scheme replacing road names with 'TOLLWAY' and 'MOTORWAY' simplified everything dramatically. Doing away with road names altogether would make it simpler still.

One of the key reasons QMR introduced freeway numbering in the 1970s was to reduce the size of signs and improve legibility. We've gone back to the stone age in recent years.

As a motorist I don't care that one half of this road is called 'Clem Jones Tunnel' and the other half 'Airport Link Tunnel'. If they must name them, place a sign by the tunnel portals.

Agreed, do like they do in the US, the road names along major routes are marked where they change / begin / end.

I refer to the Bruce Gateway and Pacific as simply M1 these days, and the M7
the M7. Sydneys I refer to all by their M numbers.

There are still a lot of motorways/freeways in Sydney that most people wouldn't call by their proper M name off the top of their head, like all of Metroad 1, the Lane Cove Tunnel and the F3 and F6 Freeways.

Iv'e heard people refer to the south eastern section of Metroad 1 that is motorway standard as the M1 but the north western section is usualy refered to by their current or former names.

It's about time you returned! Welcome back :)

Looks good to me... I'm not a fan of the split overhead signs but I don't think you have much choice.

Most likely the person in charge of signing them off has either zero interest or zero knowledge of signs - or both.

Huge changes need to happen.

The trial version of TrasiCAD is rubbish. The version that RTA uses is fairly functional and easy to use. I imagine TMR have their own refined version as well which is not publicly available.
