I have been asked to produce a report on behalf of cruisers detailing the ease (or not!) of booking into Canarian Government Marinas.

I welcome all feedback, positive or negative, for inclusion.

Thanks everyone and safe sailing.

Jackie: we don't have anything to offer with regards to Canarian Government Marinas but we no problems a getting reservations by email at Marina Lanzarote in Arricife, Marina Rubicon at Playa Blanca and at the marina in Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

Also, do you know if there will be an SSB net set up for before and during the crossing? Thanks, Dick and Lynn S/V Wind Pony lying Marina Rubicon, Lanzarote

Thanks for feedback on marinas.

Re SSB nets. I have checked with the person who handed this group over to me from last year.  He said in previous years there were morning and evening scheds organised and coordinated by one boat.  They were always at UTC (7am and 7pm?). It worked OK for a few that had really good SSB coverage.

In addition if small groups left at around the same time they agreed to call up at (another) fixed time. He seemed to think these were generally more successful.

We have decided not to cross this year by may be crewing for another boat that is crossing in January.

Does anyone in the group have any experience of running an SSB net?

I have 'run' using the term rather loosely nets whilst crossing & agree that generally smaller groups tend to be more useful (& manageable!).  Once within ~800Nm of Caribbean there are several nets operating including weather forecasts (Chris Parker, Denis etc). A useful reference and source of info is at.

At some stage they usually publish a list of nets.

Hi,
after a 6 week delay for a gearbox in Gibraltar, with the first replacement nicked or lost by UPS, a second not fitting despite Yanmar insisting it would, and proceeding with a coupling machined up by tr marvellous mechanic/engineer Kevin at Med Msrine, we arrived in Lanzarote yesterday in Rubicon.

did the list of marinas come out anywhere? Thought I saw it but now can't find it.

interested in marina/s on Gran Canaria in particular.
Also, I don't understand these references to Facebook. Is there another "Atlantic Crossing Group" somewhere on there?

thanks
Terry

Hi Terry

Very glad you finally sorted all that out.

Main marina on Grand Canaria, Las Palmas, NE corner. Big anchorage there too. Should be plenty of space there now. I was in much smaller Pasito Blanco on southern tip of Island. Quiet. Supermarket (Supermercado?) short taxi away.

Ref to Facebook is probably to Ocean Cruising Club Facebook site.

Hi Terry glad you managed to sort eveything out, was it Phillipa at Marine Mait nance that had to fly back to the UK to get your gearbox!! We are currently in las Palmas Gran Canaria Marina. Unfortunately despite several calls and emails we left Lanzarote and arrived the following morning. With no berths available (the marina is full with a waiting list depending on the length of your boat) we went on anchor. The anchorage is extremely uncomfortable in this SE swell and wind and we are use to anchoring. Unless you are in a hurry to get here, my thoughts would be to stay somewhere else until you have secured a berth here. Once in the marina everything is very accessible. Slime lines but no concrete jetty like Marina Bay in Gibraltar! The main chap here in the office is Fernando which if you do arrive, just visit him daily gently gently, he will help.

Hi Terry,
What a nightmare for you. Glad it's sorted. Alternative marina: Santa Cruz Tenerife. Not scenic but great for provisioning. We had fresh fruit and veg 3 weeks later and still have plenty of booze and dry stores bought at 20% of Barbadan price.

Concur re Santa Cruz, Tenerife. The town is actually very pleasant once beyond the dock area. Lots of good restaurants at good prices. Mostly locals.
