If only they, and all yachts, had an inexpensive satellite tracker, this wouldn't create such a hazard. The SPOT tracker or other device could be left with the ship and they might even be able to salvage their boat.

We should all look carefully at our rudder installations especially b4 a long trip!  I know Rival Lady did!
I found and replaced corroded bolts holding our skeg shoe in posn last June! 
And I suppose on easy days we could try and sail our yachts with the rudder trailing freely, might learn something.
I think it's not always obvious how much "helm" is on when constantly under autopilot.

It's not clear whether the missing boat arrived in the Canaries or not?
