How do you go about connecting the remote itself?

No I mean like, the actual remote, that you use to steer and throttle, how do I get it to actually spin the motors. Is it with CleanFlight?

Did you bind the controller (Spektrum DX6i) to the Receiver (Rx)?

When the controller is bound and the Receiver is connected to the Flight Controller (FC) you should be able to see the motions of the throttle etc. on the "Receiver" tab in CleanFlight.

So I got it to bind but I'm not getting any rotors spinning

You can use the software (cleanflight) to start troubleshooting. 

In cleanflight make sure that you can see when you adjust the controller. 

Then with the blades off make sure you can control the motors with the software.

Other things to check: 

You need to flip the switches back to flight mode. 1 and 2 on, 3, 4, 5, 6, off.

Make sure on the Configuration screen under ESC/Motor features MOTOR_STOP is not turned on.

One of the teams brought their setup in with the same problem. Everything is connected correctly, receiver is bound, but the motors don't spin with the throttle.

There is also an arming procedure, this turns the motors on and off using the controller.
