When connecting the FC to any laptop we are getting the failed to open serial port message in the cleanflight browser extension.
Has anyone had issues with this step in the process, or advice on how to configure the FC? All internet searches are coming up empty?

We were able to open the serial port but now we are getting a "No response from the bootloader, programming FAILED" message.

There might be an issue with the USB cable. It needs to be a data transfer cable not just a charging cable. I used one that transfers data from my phone to my computer.

Is the FC lighting up when plugged in?

Remember to check the positions of your dip switches.

Hi,
We have been trying to get CleanFlight to work with our FC, but have been struggling for the past few days. We have gotten the same aforementioned errors: "Failed to open Serial Port" and "No response from Bootloader, programming FAILED". We installed all of the proper drivers and have flipped the dip switches to the proper settings. I contacted a friend at a different school who is also participating in the Games, and he said he's been having the same issues. If anybody has any solutions, please let me know!

We are in the process of verifying this work around, but it seems like some of the flight controllers were sent with an older base version. The solution is to manually install a older version of cleanflight onto your browser, update your firmware, and then you can resume using the newest version of cleanflight.

The configurator version that ended up working was 1.0.0

I am having issues with CleanFlight connecting to the FC. There were no lights when plugged in, I have tried different cables.

Is your PC recognizing a USB device is connected? Windows > Device Manager > USB  (Universal Serial Bus Controllers)

It is possible it was shorted. Did you previously wire the FC or are you trying to connect it by itself?

There is no indication of anything being plugged in. I tried both wired and by itself. All I'm getting is "Failed to open serial Port". I have the version 1.0.0 of CleanFlight. The program doesn't seem to recognized that the FC is plugged in

This was for use with Libra/Open pilot. But the idea should still be the same.

Windows 10 should automatically try to install a driver when you first plug in.

You might try plugging it in while Device Manager is open and see if it adds a new USB Composite Device to the list. If it does, delete/uninstall the added device, unplug the FC then plug it back in.

installing a usb to uart driver manually might be another possible fix:
