Again, what is the point of the Atlantis expedition? What are they doing?
--They are not exploring the city for Ancient tech.
--They are not looking for ZPMs
----They didn't even consider it on the replicator homeworld.
------It's just as well, they lose out whenever they get greedy.
--They are not exploring the Pegasus galaxy
----Cuz when they do they only rile more enemies.
----And thus negate the role of Teyla.
----And the recent ep negating reason for exploring the galaxy (if Weir was
telling the truth, the highest tech in the galaxy is at Atlantis).
--Their presence provides a greater danger to Earth.
----Their presence alerts potential enemies of the Milky Way.
----The city has a gate that goes right to Earth.
----Their computers has intel on Earth defenses.
----They also have intel about the gatebridge.
--They have managed to sideline all of the female characters.
----Teyla ignored, given redundant skills, ignored.
----Weir gone, replicated, bumped off, merged and bumped off.
----Carter at best redundant, then bumped off.
----Keller increasingly unlikeable (aside from actress).
--They now seem to be working on the male characters.
----Sheppard remains with the same level of depth after 4 seasons as the
start.
----Ford was bumped off, but made an interesting hybrid, then ignored.
----Beckett killed, cloned, then bumped off the show.
----McKay has become more arrogant, more isolationist. They have made the
rest of the science staff increasingly redundant, including Zelenka.
Previous seasons would not have had McKay yelling at Zelenka to shut up. He
would have relished brainstorming with him.
----Woolsey has been promoted from recurring bureaucrat to regular one.
----Ronon--the sole exception--has actually gotten more interesting. But he
can't carry the entire show on his shoulders. Buffy tried that in its sixth
season and while James Marsters' Spike had a similar role as Ronon
(character brought in after the rest of the cast as particularly warlike and
yet has been revealed to have vast depths and increasing popularity) but S6
overexposed the character to the point he got unfair backlash from fans of
other characters on the show. The same could happen to Ronon.

Worse the show keeps missing opportunities:
--Michael could have been an interesting addition to the show.
--WraithFord could have been an interesting addition to the show.
--RepliWeir could have been an interesting addition to the show.
--RepliFran could have been an interesting addition to the show.
--RepliWeirFran could have been an interesting addition to the show.
--RepliWeirTeyla could have been an interesting way to remake Teyla back
into the role she was intended, a guide to the Pegasus galaxy.

The interesting part would be their hybrid natures, how much could they be
trusted? Would they turn? Watching their growth as characters and members of
the Atlantis expedition team. But nooooooooooooooooooooo, like STAR TREK:
VOYAGER before it, SGA keeps missing opportunities. Like VOY, the
characters, the actors, the writers are capable of, deserve better, and yet
... they keep missing a step.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.tv/msg/02c3843386a6ade7?hl=en

WORSE than being irredeemably bad, SGA has shown itself on occassion capable
of greatness--making its continued trend of mediocrity all the MORE
DISAPPOINTING. Like many a comic book writer or an episode of SNL, just when
you're ready to give up, they produce something interesting that hooks you
back in, then continue the massive disappointment.

Stop the pain, cut the losses and start from scratch.

-- Ken from Chicago

P.S. It's not like they don't have a viable universe for more series:

Too right! Thanks, Ken. 8-)

Ya see, *that* is precisely why I started my 'not-spin-off,' Stargate -
The Fifth Generation. It keeps the 'Gate, it keeps the S.G.C., and it
maintains links with the original series.

Best wishes,

There is something lacking in the writing. In SG-1 the dialogue between
Jackson & O'Neill was at time sjust brilliant. The nearest in Atlantis is
between McKay and Zelenka (and that has been turned right down over the last
two seasons). The Sheppard/Weir relationship had great potential, untilt hey
write her out.

They've had too many character changes for my liking and a little too much
of ther Replicator thing (it ran out of steam in SG-1 and has long since run
out of steam in SGA with the exception of FRAN)

Ronan and Tey'la just don't seem to be very interesting characters .Ronan
had potential in Sateda, but he just seems very 1 dimensional and now that
Tey'la has a baby that is going to dominate the show too much (there are
plenty of day time shows about babies and baby poo)

I can't agree with you more on *everything* you said here. Let's
hope things improve but I doubt it. They've got the list of eps
coming up and I've seen it. It's not too promising. Oh well...

Well they got their 100 eps in now, maybe time to end the series after 5.

They did have the facility to fly Atlantis back to our Galaxy when they got
hold of the other ZPM's. However, that would have been too obvious. I'd say
that they have a moral duty to kill off the Wraith (after all they woke them
up) AND the Wraith know know there is a huge potential feeding ground in our
Galaxy. If the Wraith got hold of advanced star drives, they could make it
to our Galaxy or possibly even develop the gate system. Better to fight a
war in someone else's back yard.

I agree. However, given TPTB's past. they will milk the cow for all that
it's worth, never mind the quality of the output. As someone has said, they
should give the franchise a break and then let a fresh team loose on it.

It worked for Doctor Who. (Or not, depending on who you ask. <g>)

Ok, so when was Stargate ever that smart?

Its a reset common lowest denominator TV show. Why expect more? If it was
that smart it would lose most of its US viewers and be axed. That's why US
TV is so dumbed down.

It needs a whole new mind set to turn it in the show I suspect both you and
I would like to see.

Being French and knowing well also German, Italian, Belgium and
English TV, I can tell you that if you think that US TV is dumbed
down... well, I don't know what word can be used to describe European
TV. OK, English TV is the best of the lot and has a few very good
shows in a sea of trash and vulgarity.
US TV on the average may be low-level, but it has the best and most
intelligent TV programs in the world.

while you think the writers would make them really smart.

Lost is a joke. Its not consistent and its not a lot more than the writers
taking the piss out of the fans. Its a horrible show. Wake up and see the
"Kings new clothes". Do I watch it? Yes, but all I want to know is how it
ends. Watching is pure torture.

Heroes: S2? Hello. Even the producers acknowledge its rubbish. Even Season
1 ended really badly too.

Both shows started incredibly well, but dumbed down with in 12 eps.

Firefly proves my point.

Being a Brit, I have to agree about Euro TV. But to be fair, we don't see
much of it. And, yeah, US TV is head and shoulders above Euro TV. However, I
believe that that is about to change. If my information is still correct
there will be a stunning Canadian/German SciFi production coming very soon.

But to call US TV intelligent is nuts. Its incredibly well made and
produced, but the writing is so simplistic.

My ideal would be UK core writing with US glitz and money.

It used to be that we wrote the best stuff, while the US made the best
stuff. Both have improved in that the US writes better and the UK produces
better, but the UK can never afford 20-24 episodes high budget series, while
the US still doesn't have the guts for long term good writing.

I do how ever believe both stereotypes are slowly changing. This is one of
the reasons I want the whole SG franchise to hibernate for a few years.

Oh, I should honest and point out a huge bias of mine: I like properly
planned, arced out with lots of back story, type TV series. And I've only
seen one come out of the US: Babylon 5.

That's very difficult to do for business reasons. TV writers need to
be able to roll with the punches: actors quitting (or even dying
sometimes), shows being canceled or extended without much warning,
demands for changes that come from suits who control the purse strings
or even sponsors, and so on. B5 was an exception and for that reason,
is not a good model, since few if any writers will ever get that
option again; and the suits even managed to screw up that promise with
a premature and then canceled cancellation! My vote goes to Joss
Whedon for his seasonal arcs which allow for longer story telling and
back stories in ways that are in line with what's actually
possible...some of the time.

Which also doesn't make sense. If going through a space gate is
bothersome to them, then how was Weir able to tell them it was fine?

I don't agree. Some shows have a great writing: The Wire was
borderline pure genius, BSG is usually great, Dexter is very good,
Lost is much more intelligent than it may seem. And that's just the
shows I watch. I heard that the In Treatment was great (but it's a
remake of an Israeli show), The Sopranos was also, like 6FU and
others.

> My ideal would be UK core writing with US glitz and money.

UK writing is the best in Europe, but it's overrated. I did not like
so much Life on Mars (nice 70's cop show but that's all, not so clever
after all), Dr Who is silly, the Office UK is funnier than the US
version but that's still only a comedy. Coupling was better than
Friends but did not reach the quality and sophistication of Seinfeld.
Jekyll last year was really a great mini-series (mainly because of the
main actor).

Rodney's eccentricities) is a prelude to that? I hope so. I really love
the rapport between the two characters and would hate to see Zelenka
reduced to a lowly tech status in the background. He's had some good
stories in the past, I hope tptb have more planned in the future! Maybe
a love story between him and Jennifer? Or Teyla? He's quite charming in
a lot of ways, ;-).

Don't forget

Ultraviolet, the vampire hunters without vampires, never remade in an
American version.

MI-5, or Spooks as you might know it. It's what 24 wants to be when it
grows up.

It wouldn't hurt Stargate Atlantis to capture a little of the flavor of
both those shows

She was collaborating with SGA crowd to get rid of the replicators. She
realized
that the others were still a threat and since she was really weir was
willing to
sacrifice herself for the better good (which is why the comment that she
really was
weir came at the end). She went through the gate and then told everyone via
replicator
ESP that they were on the planet they had chosen. So the rest went through.
And then were
lost-in-space..

But why did the other REPLICATORS trust her?

Because she's one of them. They may not be capable of distrusting a
fellow replicator.

Read 'Coda'?

Makes one want to weep. Andromeda could have been a darn good show.

There's an awful LOT of US tv - we in the UK and Europe see the
tiniest tip of the iceberg. The cream that has floated to the top. If
there seems to be more quality stuff from the US, it's because they
produce so much more than we do. Sturgeon's Law - 90% of everything is
dreck. We don't see their dreck because (for the most part) it
doesn't make it across. They don't usually see our dreck for the same
reason - and the result is, they think *our* tv is superior!

So if that's the *best* that we get, imagine the *rest* that we don't.

because it was 57 minutes into the 1 hour show. It wasn't a 2 parter so it
was a requirement that
they trust her. That way the episode could end.

Or she gave them what they were looking to see via her replicator
communications and they believed and
it was too late after the first one went through to tell the last one to
kill all the humans and then come for them.

If only they'd thought of that 50 minutes earlier.
