A Tallahassee woman allegedly attacked and killed her 65-year-old mother in
their home Friday - then called 911 and confessed the crime to an emergency
dispatcher.
When police arrived, Ruth Chen Ju Wang allegedly confessed again, then
showed the officers her mother's body, lying on the living room floor
covered with towels, said Scott Hunt, Tallahassee Police Department
spokesman.
Investigators released few details Friday on what may have led up to the
slaying of Luan Wu Wang.
The two women lived together in a small ranch home in the 1400 block of Raa
Avenue, a quiet, oak-shaded residential neighborhood on Tallahassee's
northwest side. Neighbors said they'd lived there for about six or seven
years.
Luan Wu Wang reportedly worked as a nurse at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
Ruth Chen Ju Wang is a 1997 magna cum laude graduate of Florida State
University, where she earned a degree in French. Neighbors said she is an
accomplished classical pianist.
Mother 'too controlling,' woman says
After the slaying, police sealed the house with yellow tape, while
investigators in disposable boots probed the crime scene for evidence. Cars
were turned back as they approached, and neighborhood kids stood in small
knots, watching.
In the driveway of the house next door, Ruth Chen Ju Wang, 29, stood
quietly, head bowed, as police put her in handcuffs and helped her into an
unmarked car. She wore a loose, white dress that blazed in the mid-morning
sunlight.
She allegedly told investigators she killed her mother because she was "too
controlling." Police are looking into reports that she may have a mental
illness and may have stopped taking her medication, Hunt said.
He declined to say how she may have killed her mother, but sources said she
was strangled.
Neighbors said there didn't appear to be any trouble between the mother and
daughter. They didn't have many visitors at their home and seemed to spend
all their time together.
"I thought she was very close with her mom," said Peggy Walsh, 47, who lived
next door.
Two weeks ago, the mother threw a "welcome to the neighborhood" party for
newcomer Barbara Barfield and her family.
For Barfield, 46, it was there she saw that something might be wrong.
At the party, the daughter began playing the piano and wouldn't stop. When
her mother asked her to stop so that other people could carry on
conversations, she refused. When her mother asked again, she began playing
louder and more wildly, Barfield said.
Her mother eventually had to gently tug her away from the piano.
"We came home and thought that was a little unusual," she said.
The slaying was the second in Tallahassee this week. On Monday, the body of
43-year-old Daniel Kovack was discovered in the Mail Boxes Etc. store he
owned on Bradford Road. So far, police have named no suspects.
