An Alberta Hells Angel sentenced last year to nine years for kidnapping and beating a B.C. man was attacked by another inmate in Matsqui prison earlier this month.

Sources confirmed that Robert Lowry of the Edmonton chapter of the notorious biker gang was injured in the Nov. 18 attack.

Marie Messer, an assistant warden at Matsqui, said in an emailed statement that “an inmate was found to have been victim of an assault” at the medium-security federal institution.

“The injured inmate was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital to receive treatment and has since returned to the institution,” the statement said. “The assailants have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken.”

Messer did not say what those actions were.

“No staff members or other inmates were injured during this incident. The Correctional Service of Canada will investigate the circumstances of this incident,” Messer said. “The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.”

Later CSC regional manager Jean-Paul Lorieau told Postmedia that police were not contacted about the attack on the inmate.

Lowry is appealing both his 2020 conviction and his 2021 sentence. His appeal is scheduled to be heard in January.

In July 2021, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ward Branch sentenced Lowry, fellow Hells Angel Neil Cantrill and Cantrill’s son Stephan after convicting all three a year earlier for kidnapping, extortion, aggravated assault and overcoming resistance for a vicious attack on Robert Houle, a former Hope man who grew cannabis for Neil Cantrill for more than a dozen years.

In December 2014, Houle travelled to Edmonton to tell his partner that he wanted out of the pot business and offered the growing equipment to the biker.

He heard nothing more until July 31, 2016, when Neil Cantrill contacted him to arrange a meeting. The next day, Houle arrived at a roadside pullout near Hope, where he was grabbed, choked and beaten, then taken to his house where the trio tried to force him to sign the property over.

RCMP officers arrived and took Houle to hospital for cuts, broken bones and a burn to his forehead.

Branch said Houle had been severely impacted by the brutal assault and was forced to enter the witness protection program.

“When Mr. Lowry was choking him, Mr. Houle thought he was going to die as he was losing consciousness as well as control of his bowels,” Branch said. “He left town fearing that his life was on the line.”

At the time of the attack, Lowry was a Hells Angel “hang around.” He later became a full-patch member of the club.

Neil Cantrill was sentenced to 10 years, while his son got six years for their roles in the 2016 kidnapping and attack.

Greedy, greedy, greedy Hell's Angels. Good reporting yet again by Kim Bolan.

Lowry was once a promising computer programmer, having developed a computer program and eventually being awarded a $970,000 grant from the federal government for software development. He and his wife raised two children, and have a close family.

In 2007, Lowry was diagnosed with concurrent mental health issues, followed by a car accident in 2009 that resulted in a brain injury. He currently suffers from anxiety, depression, insomnia, mood and sleep disorders, bi-polar disorder, anger issues, hypogonadism and syncope.

His medical issues led to his life taking a turn for the worse, the judge wrote. He became a “hang around” with the Hells Angels chapter where Neil Cantrill is a member. But the court found that when Lowry joined up with Cantrill, he didn’t intend to get involved in a violent attack. He also does not have a criminal record. But just the same, he participated, the report read.

ALERT investigators displayed results from a coordinated crackdown on a high-profile motorcycle gang, and released more details on their investigation.

On Wednesday morning, officers with ALERT, RCMP and the Edmonton Police Service executed ten search warrants in the capital region – ALERT said Friday that the warrants lead to the seizure of two handguns, 26 pounds of marijuana, and 19 vests.

The next day, ALERT said a total of six members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang – the gang at the centre of the investigation – had been arrested and are facing organized crime charges.

“They’re involved in things like drug trafficking, there could be human trafficking, gun trafficking, mortgage frauds,” ALERT Insp. Darcy Strang said Friday. “Anything that makes money.”

ALERT said it’s the first time members of the gang have been charged with organized crime in Alberta.

The accused include Darcy Lee, 38, Troy Pawluk, 43, Eduardo Bartolozzi, 34, and Dustin Lowry, 35, all from Edmonton, Dominic Depalma, 33, from Strathcona County, and Roy Radies, 50, from Acheson, have all been charged.

In addition, ALERT said Friday that a seventh individual, a woman, was also charged in connection to the raids – but she wasn’t listed in the initial release, police said, because she’s not a member of the Hells Angels.

Police believe the bust has made a dent in the Hells Angels Westridge Chapter – as that clubhouse was one of the ten locations searched Wednesday.

The entire investigation was sparked after a clash in Drayton Valley in February, involving Hells Angels and a rival gang called The Warlock.

However, Insp. Strang said investigators were not allowed to search one item on that property – a white trailer – as officers didn’t have a warrant to search it.

CTV News cameras later recorded the trailer in question being towed away – Strang admitted that trailer might’ve yielded more evidence.

“I wasn’t at the scene, so I don’t know what happened in relation to the timing and such, again we had over 200 people involved in this and most everyone was busy,” Strang said.

The six men arrested as part of the investigation were expected to appear in court Friday afternoon.

http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/more-details-released-in-crackdown-on-hells-angels-1.1792750#ixzz2zx92nk2E So one guy from Edmonton named Lowry is doing hard time for pummeling and kidnapping a former pot grower Mr. Houle who supplied the Edmonton club with weed and another Lowry is a full patch member of that club? Think they might be related? How was it the police came to arrive at Houle's home as the three men tried to force him to sign it over none of the news stories say. Why did the one Lowry start spending lots of time in Greece around the time the other Lowry started doing his bit?
