An Alberta Hells Angel who kidnapped and beat a former B.C. associate who no longer wanted to grow illegal pot was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ward Branch accepted that long-time biker Neil Cantrill, 62, was the leader of a 2016 extortion plot and should receive a longer term than his two co-accused — his own son Stephan, 38, and fellow Hells Angel Robert Lowry, 49.

All three were convicted a year ago of kidnapping, extortion, aggravated assault and overcoming resistance for the vicious attack on Robert Houle, a former Hope man who grew cannabis for Neil Cantrill for more than a dozen years.
On Friday, Branch sentenced Lowry to nine years and handed Stephan a six-year jail term.
In December 2014, Houle travelled to Edmonton to tell his partner that he wanted out of the pot business and offered the growing equipment to the biker.
He heard nothing more until July 31, 2016, when Neil Cantrill contacted him to arrange a meeting. The next day, Houle arrived at a roadside pullout near Hope, where he was grabbed, choked and beaten then taken to his house, where the trio tried to force him to sign over the property.
RCMP officers arrived and took Houle to hospital for cuts, broken bones and a burn to his forehead.
Branch said Houle had been severely impacted by the brutal assault and was forced to enter the witness protection program.
“When Mr. Lowry was choking him, Mr. Houle thought he was going to die as he was losing consciousness as well as control of his bowels,” Branch said. “He left town fearing that his life was on the line.”
He said Neil Cantrill “was the leader of the extortion effort. He was the party that had the business relationship with Mr. Houle. He was the only one who knew Mr. Houle. He is the party who lured Mr. Houle to the pullout.”
Branch said a report filed at the sentencing hearing showed Cantrill had no remorse for his crimes.
“He states he felt he was definitely owed some money and was certainly trying to get what was rightfully his,” Branch said, quoting the report. “The subject feels bad the guy got hurt, but he should have known what was coming. The subject did not express any remorse.”
He also said the elder Cantrill had control over his son and over Lowry, given that Lowry was a “hang-around” in the Hells Angels at the time. Lowry is now a full-patch member.
Branch said Lowry had a long history as a successful businessman until he was sidelined by a 2009 car accident. He had no prior criminal record.
Lowry served as the “muscle” for the extortion scheme, the judge said.
“There was at least a risk of further violence if the police had not intervened.”
The younger Cantrill had little contact with his father growing up because “his mother left Neil Cantrill when he indicated his intention to join the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club,” Branch said.
Stephan also had no criminal record prior to the kidnapping. His role in the 2016 violence was more limited than Lowry’s, the judge said.
“Although I find that — as with Mr. Lowry — his conduct on the day was so well choreographed, he must have been aware of the general parameters of the extortion plan beforehand.”
Stephan Cantrill has “very strong and broad community support from family, friends and employers who indicated great surprise that Stephan would have become involved in an incident such as this,” Branch said.
“His involvement in this crime appears to have been more about seeking his father’s approval.”
