It’s a Third Dose Against Omicron, not a Booster, BioNTech CEO Says

The antibody responses seen in lab tests conducting using the blood
samples suggest that three doses of the original vaccine provides as
much protection against infection caused by Omicron as two doses against
the original strain of the virus.
Two doses of the vaccine, meanwhile, appear to provide little protection
against infection by Omicron, though the companies said that they expect
that other immune mechanisms would provide protection against
hospitalization and death.
That implies substantial changes may be required to global vaccination
plans. BioNTech CEO Dr. Ugur Sahin said at a virtual press conference on
Wednesday that, against Omicron, the vaccine is effectively a three-dose
vaccine.
“It is very clear, our vaccine, for the Omicron variant, should be a
three-dose vaccine,” Sahin said.
