LET THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ON DVD IN SEPT.
By MICHAEL GILTZ
February 10, 2004 -- PUT down that light saber and pick up a credit
card: The "Star Wars" trilogy is finally coming to DVD Sept. 21.
Fans have long been clamoring for DVD versions of the trilogy, the
last holdouts from the top 200 grossing films of all time to be
scheduled for release on DVD.
"Star Wars" creator George Lucas has finally relented, after insisting
the three movies wouldn't be released until the final "Star Wars" hits
theaters in May 2005.
The set (details like pricing are still unavailable) will include four
DVDs, with the fourth disc containing a brand-new two-hour
documentary.
The DVDs, which are certain to be blockbusters, are also certain to be
controversial: Despite pleas from "Star Wars" fanatics all over the
world, these DVDs will not contain the original theatrical version of
the movies.
Instead, the DVDs will include the much-debated versions director
Lucas released in the '90s with new digital effects and plot twists
that softened the character of Han Solo - even though DVD makes it
easy to offer both the original and director's cut of a movie.
It's simply a matter of an artist's right, says Jim Ward, a Lucasfilm
vice president and the executive producer of the set.
"We realize there's a lot of debate out there," says Ward. "But this
is not a democracy. We love our fans, but this is about art and
filmmaking. [George] has decided that the sole version he wants
available is this one."
The original "Star Wars" from 1977 is the second-highest-grossing
movie of all time in the U.S. (behind "Titanic"), and all three "Star
Wars" movies in the trilogy still rank in the Top 20.

Wookiee! 'Star Wars' Trilogy Set for Sept. DVD Release
By John Maynard
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 10, 2004; Page C01
"Star Wars" aficionados won't have to wait for the May 2005 release of
the sixth movie in the franchise for their next big thrill.
The original "Star Wars" trilogy, comprising the 1977 movie, its 1980
sequel "The Empire Strikes Back" and 1983's "Return of the Jedi," will
be released on DVD as a four-disc boxed set in September, Fox Home
Entertainment and Lucasfilm Ltd. announced yesterday.
The announcement ends months of speculation by fans about when the
beloved sci-fi films would finally be released on DVD. They have been
available only on VHS videotape. No price was given for the DVD set.
"I think it will be a huge success and I'm sure it will be among the
bestsellers of boxed sets," said Bo Andersen, president of the Video
Software Dealers Association, which represents the $23 billion video
industry.
The "Star Wars" trio currently sits atop Amazon.com's customer wish
list of upcoming DVDs, just ahead of the television series "Charmed"
and "Seinfeld."
The boxed set was scheduled to come out after the release of the sixth
movie, now known simply as "Star Wars: Episode III." But the films'
creator, George Lucas, "found some time" to work on the DVD version,
said Jim Ward, Lucasfilm vice president of marketing and distribution
and DVD executive producer.
"He was willing and eager to make it happen," Ward said.
He also quashed rumors that had been springing up on Web sites devoted
to "Star Wars" that Lucas would not contribute a spoken commentary for
the DVD.
"We're really thankful and lucky to have our fans," Ward said, "but
they also love to speculate based on not a lot of knowledge."
A Lucasfilm spokeswoman could not confirm which actors or crew members
would appear for the extra features on the DVD. The fourth disc in the
set will include a feature-length documentary about the "Star Wars"
saga and never-before-seen footage from the making of the three films.
The boxed set will contain the special editions of the "Star Wars"
trilogy released in the late 1990s and not the original theatrical
versions.
That doesn't sit well with some fans, including Paul Wise, a
50-year-old Dallas resident who is partner and webmaster of
theforce.net, one of the most visited "Star Wars" fan sites.
"Almost every fan wants both versions," he said. "The movie I saw when
I was young is not the same as the special edition. I want to see the
original."
No chance, according to Ward. "What George did in 1997," when he
released the special edition, "was make the movie he originally wanted
to make," but in 1977 "he didn't have the technology available."
Despite his objection, Wise plans to buy the set on the first day it
becomes available.
"I'll be standing in line when the doors open and I'll have plenty of
company with me," he said.

Of the Special Edition?? I've only seen them once and that was at the
cinema. What changed? How was Solo "softened"?
WHAT??!!?? How in THE HELL can you give Cabin Frickin' Fever a higher rating
than Mexico??!!?? I am disappointed in you, Lorne!
Umm... because Cabin Fever was funny and fairly entertaining, and
OUaTiM was a horrid piece of shit?
I watched Lost in Translation again tonight. Now *that* is a great

Oh jesus, was that it? Lucas is a tit. He's done some great things in
the past but he's a tit now.

No, the first edition of ET was always gonna be on one of the dvd
sets. Lucas on the other hand keeps tinkering and even changed some of
Episode II before committing that movie to DVD.
huh, i didnt know he made any changes for the DVD. he's a strange one...

I'll agree with Mexico not being too good, but it was ok for a cheap rental.
Cabin Fever had the WORST acting of the year and completely ridiculous script.
Anybody you know act REMOTELY like that?
That's not like you to turn down some BC bud, Josh. ;o)

It was always going to be on there, but Spielberg and the studio said
the opposite up until one week before the DVD's release. Prior to that
they said it would only contain the 2002 version.

Perspective is very important. Mexico was a lame sequel to a passable
sequel to a great low-budget flick. To do stuff just for the money
without any effort at a script deserves one star.
Personal disclaimer: this logic I do not apply to Star Wars: Episodes
I and II.

OK, that is a fair system to use. I understand, and totally agree with you
then on that criteria. But, I will disagree TOTALLY on Cabin Fever. Uggg,
makes me ill just thinking of it.

The "Collector's Edition" was always gonna contain both versions, but
the "regular" "Special edition" only the 2002 version. The Region 2
verion of the SE actually only contains the 2002 version.
BTW Saw the 3 disc edition in MediaMarkt today for less than 12 euro,
whole stacks of it. That release must have bombed. ;-)

Can't recall specifics, but I remember watching the SVCD and thinking
occasionally "I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the movie".

foudn this:

Yes, once again Lucas meddles somewhat with his films. For the DVD
version of Phantom Menace, Lucas added extra footage of the Pod Race
and the City capital planet of Coruscant. Now, he's made some slight
changes here as well, however. However these are not added FX, but
simply extensions of scenes cut from the theatrical release. Other cut
scenes from the film that Lucas did not want to add will probably be
found on disc II, but here are the scenes sort of hard-wired to the
film:
-Slight extension of Anakin's breakdown before Padme. Anakin states
remorse for killing all the Tusken Raiders, and how he should have had
better control. Padme assures him that to err is human.
-Padme's wacking up from being knocked out of the Gunship has been
changed somewhat. Instead of saying "Yes" she says a more exasperated
"Uh-huh..."
-The wedding sequence has an extra shot of Anakin grasping Padme's
hand with his mechanical one and putting the ring on it.
-----------------------------------------------------
but you do smoke once in a while? now I don't feel so bad when you picked me
up for my "date" lol
ARE YOU SURE THIS IS THE RIGHT WAY, JOSH!?!?!?
"I ain't THAT fucked up"
That scene was so screwed up. The moral of episode 2 was if you commit
genocide, you get the girl?!?!
I saw the original trilogy out in the garage. I can't even remember the
original Star Wars - I'm going to have to see if the originals were any
good, or if star wars is just lame. I don't think I'm even going to bother
seeing esp 3 at the moment.
Oops. You're right. Forgot about that.
>BTW Saw the 3 disc edition in MediaMarkt today for less than 12 euro,

Well, of course... the only thing worth having was on the two disc
version. :o)
WTF?
Anyway, I don't really... twice in 2002 (for the first times since
1986), and nothing since then.

With the lack of respect George is showing for these films, I could see him
doing some of these things. I'm happy with my boots.
There's also a rumour running around that the reason George is adamant about
NEVER releasing the OT is due to his divorce. Something about the OT being
tied to the financial settlement.
Of course, like that link above, this is all speculative.

That's the only moral you get knowing that the person who "commits
genocide" and "gets the girl" turns into Darth Vader????
Also, Episode 2 changed even BEFORE the DVD release. In the digital
theatrical presentation there were changes from the film presetation;
for example, in the digital version he added the last shot of Anakin's
mechanical hand; this was not in the version that was shown in
non-digital theatres. Then, of course, on DVD there were lots of
little tinkering.
