Aadaab:
Ham ko maaloom hai jannat ki haqeeqat laikin
Dil ke khush rakhne ko Ghalib yeh khyal accha hai

Some people claim that it should be 'behlane' instead of 'khush rakhne'!
What is the correct version?

A couple of questions to you, as I presume you will have done a little big of digging into this yourself. What is your take on this shi3r? Secondly, what is Maqbool Sahib's view on its correct version?

I checked in Diwan-e-Ghalb compiled by Ghulam Rasool Mehr, and in Rekhta on the Internet. Both sources point to 'khush rakhne'. Sohail also is sure that it is 'khush rakhne'. Some people still think that 'behlane' is correct. I just wanted another opinion from the group. I am , myself, in favor of 'khush rakhne'.

Some 20 years ago, I think, there was a thread in our
Newsgroup ---> "UstaadoN ki Islaah" or words to that
effect..............

And, I believe, examples used to be given in the above
thread, where some ALUPers would suggest alternate words
or expressions to what the poet had originally written.

K. S. Saheb has mentioned citations from well-known (or
not so well-known) sources about what Mirza Ghalib had
originally written.

And, it seems that these sources are sort of united in
believing that the words originally used were "KHush
rakhne ko".....

But, I am inclined to believe that even "behlaane ko"
makes sense here.......

Phir, is sher ki islaah karne men kya harj hai ? !!!

I agree with you for your preference of "bahlaane" over "xvush rakhne", Raj Kumar SaaHib. It carries the meaning of "amusement", "recreation" , "entertainment" and more!

tamannaa'oN meN uljhaayaa gayaa huuN
khilonay de ke bahlaayaa gayaa huuN

dekhiye, yahaaN lafz "bahlaane" ka kyaa Khuub iste'maal hu'aa hai!

It is indeed Shad Azimabadi.

Here is my favorite she'r from this ghazal:

huN is kuuche ke har zarre se aagah
idhar se muddatoN aayaa gayaa huuN

Prof RK, remember the recent detailed 'vazn' discussion we had regarding aagah/aagaah. The consensus was that in this position in the misra'a, it can go either way. So, you will let me get away with 'aagah' here, right? :)
