The Majority of American Citizens the Middle class and the poor
continue to get increases in tax bills utility tax fee increases,
sales tax increases, gasoline tax increases, service fee increases
(tax increases that relate to everyday needs instead of rich
extravagances of the rich elites) paying the majority of taxes in
support of this treasury robbery, while the rich elites get massive
tax breaks even though they are receiving a much greater share of the
total income produced in this country and not allowing fair wage
increases sharing their prosperity taking their money elsewhere
(overseas).
Basically we are turning into an industrial fascist elite
dictatorship
(China's version of Communism) Making the common citizens slaves to
the elite rich puppet masters of our corrupt government.
No new taxes what a joke, time to tax the rich elite and maybe give
tax breaks only to in country U.S. Industries that only create new
jobs (not new titled reduced wage same jobs - bait and switch) and
good wages.
Trickle down economics (Not taxing the rich so they have more to
maybe
(not must) invest in local industry creating new jobs and better
wages) has never worked and with free trade globalization is
insanely
worse.
Service company profits (Like that of Walmart) made here are
transferred overseas to purchase cheaper often lower quality, even
unsafe, manufactured products. When this money leaves our country,
(unless we have a trade surplus with that manufacturing foreign
country) that money is permanently lost to our government as far as
generating new tax revenues from it.
Profits without the burden of social responsibilities to fund our
government operation and support the infrastructure, treasury,
social
programs (Social Services i.e. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid,
Welfare Programs, Government employees and military retirement
benefits). The rich hold onto even more of their money as they have
more than enough to purchase basic needs that the middle class and
poor are now struggling with.
Profits for basic needs industries aught to be federally regulated no
greater percentages than a reasonable amount after cost of
manufacturing, materials, labor, management, infrastructure support
and expansion (tax breaks for in country job creation only no other
justification is reasonable), no tax breaks for companies operating
businesses overseas (they don't support tax revenues or in country
U.S. jobs and wages by doing business overseas).
We need to make it unprofitable to price gouge. As percent of profit
beyond a reasonable profit increases; taxes should exponentially
increase. Extreme profits in the oil and energy industry, medical and
pharmaceutical industry, banking and mortgage industry, insurance
industry, that are now destroying the Standard of Living by the
Middle
Class and Poor must end.
Why should people who invade our country be allow jobs and social
service benefits at our expense take away these benefits, jobs,
deport
them or give them extreme incentive to self-deport if we can't deport
them, secure our borders and enforce our illegal immigration (anti-
illegal alien) Laws.
Its our country and we want it back and in our control.
Don't be stupid and vote in Washington Insiders, they will only tell
you what you want to hear to get elected and then ignore you and let

The Senate voted today to preserve retroactive immunity from lawsuits
for telecommunications companies that cooperated with a government
eavesdropping program, decisively rejecting an amendment that would
have stripped the provision from a bill to modernize an electronic
surveillance law.

Senators voted 67 to 31 to shelve the amendment offered by Sens.
Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and Russell Feingold (D-Wis.). A
filibuster-proof 60 votes had been needed for the amendment to move
forward.
---
The vote represented a victory for the Bush administration and a
number of telecommunications companies -- including AT&T and Sprint
Nextel -- that face dozens of lawsuits from customers seeking billions
of dollars in damages.

Approval of the amendment would have exposed the companies to privacy
lawsuits for helping the administration monitor the calls of suspected
terrorists without warrants from a special court following the Sept.
11, 2001, attacks.

The amendment was one of a series the Senate is considering today to
modify legislation that would extend the government's authority to
carry out electronic surveillance against targets outside the United
States.

President Bush has called on Congress to rapidly renew the
surveillance authority granted to the federal government in the
Protect America Act approved last year.

But he has vowed to veto any bill that does not shield the companies
that helped the government carry out the warrantless wiretapping
program he ordered after the Sept. 11 attacks.

About 40 lawsuits have been filed against U.S. telecommunications
companies by plaintiffs who alleged that the firms' actions violated
wiretapping and privacy laws.

Immunity from such lawsuits must also be approved by the House, which
does not provide such protection in its version of the bill.

The Senate bill is aimed at modernizing the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act of 1978.

The Protect America Act last year gave the government expanded
authority to carry out surveillance, but its provisions expired Feb.
1. Congress and Bush agreed to an extension that runs out Friday.

In debate on the Senate floor before the vote, Dodd said it was a bad
precedent to grant retroactive immunity to telecommunications
companies, and he urged senators to "allow the courts to do their
job."

Arguing against the amendment, Sen. Christopher S. Bond (R-Mo.) said
that permitting lawsuits against the companies would lead to public
disclosure of vital intelligence-gathering methods and would
discourage the private sector from cooperating with the government in
the future. He said the companies facing lawsuits had acted "in good
faith," and he called the immunity provision "an essential part of
this bill."

Seventeen Democrats and one independent joined 49 Republicans in
voting against the Dodd-Feingold amendment. Among those voting with
the majority was Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the leading candidate for

that their phone conversations are private."

"illegally turned over private customer call information to the

One would have allowed the lawsuits to go forward but would have made

When it came to sex, Bill Clinton made us debate the definition of
"is." Now, when it comes to economics, Hillary Clinton wants to debate
the definition of "long," claiming last week in Ohio that "I've long
been a critic of the shortcomings of NAFTA."
---
True, Clinton has recently criticized NAFTA � the 1993 trade policy
whose lack of labor and environmental protections encourages companies
to move American jobs overseas.
---
But cheap campaign rhetoric over a few months does not make one a
longtime critic � especially considering the record.
---
During Clinton's 1996 visit to Texas, United Press International
reported that she "touted the president's support for NAFTA."
---
In her memoir, Clinton trumpeted her husband's "successes on the
budget, the Brady bill and NAFTA."
----
The Buffalo News reports that in 1998 she "praised corporations for
mounting 'a very effective business effort in the U.S. on behalf of
NAFTA.' "
---
And last year, her lead Wall Street fundraiser told reporters that
Clinton remains "committed" to NAFTA's "free" trade structure.
---
Clinton's attempt to hide this history emulates a principle pioneered
by George W. Bush in this, the age of stenographic journalism. As he
made his unsubstantiated case for war, Bush proved that the media are
willing to present politicians' lies as fact.

Clinton simply figures that if she says she has "long been a critic"
of NAFTA, then the assertion will be transcribed as truth.
---
That said, her U-turn is about more than dishonesty � it is about the
public will.
---
Back when Clinton was the Democrats' presumptive nominee, she wasn't
saying much about trade.
---
And in amassing her much-vaunted "experience" in Congress, she never
led a fight to reform NAFTA.
---
But now that she is in a competitive nomination contest, Clinton has
to try to make her record palatable to voters rather than to corporate
lobbyists � and that means reflecting America's understandable anger.
---
A September NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found 59 percent of the
country believes existing trade policy "has been bad for the U.S.
economy."
---
In January, Fortune magazine found 68 percent believes other countries
"are benefiting the most from free trade, not the U.S."
---
Exit polls in 2004 showed 70 percent of Ohio Democratic voters blamed
trade policies for job losses, and those numbers could be even higher
in the state's March 4 primary.
---
Barack Obama is promising to transform trade policies so that they do
not encourage outsourcing.
---
He is also reminding voters of Clinton's support for NAFTA.
---
The two-pronged message, while belated, perfectly illustrates the
difference between "change" and "more of the same" � and not just in
the primary.
---
The Illinois senator says he wants to win back blue-collar "Reagan
Democrats" in the general election. His populism on trade will help.
---
The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll found that "by a nearly 2-to-1
margin, Republican voters believe free trade is bad for the U.S.
economy." --- Similarly, a Democracy Corps poll showed that unfair
trade policy was the top concern of self-described Republicans who
considered casting a Democratic vote in 2006.
---
Against NAFTA cheerleader Sen. John McCain, the Republican front-
runner, Obama's fair-trade position can win over these disillusioned
voters.
---
The media will be the big obstacle. Though the public wants reform and
BusinessWeek reports that economists are reconsidering their support
of NAFTA-style trade deals, the Washington punditburo has long
worshipped the status quo on this issue.
---
When NAFTA was originally debated and polls showed the country divided
over its passage, Washington Post editorial page editor Meg Greenfield
justified her refusal to publish anti-NAFTA commentary by saying that
"columnists of the left, right and middle are all in agreement" in
support of the deal.
---
Today, that Orwellian blackout has mutated into an onslaught, with the
Post's editorial board lambasting Obama for his fair-trade rhetoric.
---
But as Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio told The Nation magazine,
the naysaying should be ignored. Brown said the media attacked him for
opposing NAFTA, "And so what? I won by well into double-digits, in a
slightly Republican state, against an incumbent."
---
If Obama heeds that advice, neither Clintonian obfuscation nor media
vitriol can stop him. He will be on his way to victory and, more
importantly, to building a real mandate � one that will finally force
Washington to fix America's broken trade policy.

week, two of the world's leading humanitarian groups issued extensive
reports Monday describing:

months, the human rights situation is disastrous," Amnesty
International says in its report, titled "Carnage and Despair: Iraq
Five Years On."

In a summary of the report, Amnesty writes that "a climate of impunity
has prevailed, the economy is in tatters and the refugee crisis" keeps
escalating.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, in a report titled
"Iraq: No Let-up in the Humanitarian Crisis," writes,

"Despite limited improvements in security in some areas, armed
violence is still having a disastrous impact.

Civilians continue to be killed in the hostilities.

"The injured often do not receive adequate medical care. Millions of
people have been forced to rely on insufficient supplies of poor-
quality water as water and sewage systems suffer from a lack of
maintenance and a shortage of engineers."

The Bush administration and many Republican lawmakers, including
presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, have frequently praised
successes in Iraq in recent months, noting improvements in security in
key areas.

They attribute that in part to the buildup of U.S. troops in Iraq

Vice President Dick Cheney described the five year U.S.-led invasion
of Iraq in a news conference Monday during a visit to Baghdad.

"The government has also been unable to reign in Shiite militia
groups, such as the Mehdi Army, or to rid the Interior Ministry of

The fact that the government is divided along sectarian lines has
serious repercussions on its effectiveness and bodes ill for the

Two of the biggest oil companies in the world, BP and ConocoPhillips,
have joined forces to try to break a longstanding deadlock over the
vast reserves of natural gas in Alaska.

The firms said they would spend billions to build a pipeline from the
North Slope to feed markets in the United States and Canada.
---
The proposal Tuesday won praise from Alaska's governor, Sarah Palin.
"It's a good day," she said to reporters.
---
The announcement comes at a time when the consumption of natural gas
in the United States is increasing and conventional production is
declining. Natural gas is cleaner than other power sources, like coal,
and analysts say it is becoming increasingly critical to the nation's
energy needs.

BP and Conoco will initially spend $600 million in the next three
years to drum up support for the project, seek state and federal
approval, and secure gas supplies for the pipeline.
---
BP and Conoco said the project would be the largest-ever private-
sector construction project in North America.
----
The project, which would include a $5 billion gas-processing facility
on the North Slope, would cost about $30 billion and take at least 10
years to complete.
----
At a time when energy prices and construction costs are soaring, the
endeavor would dwarf the 800-mile, or 1,290 kilometer, trans-Alaska
oil pipeline, a momentous project completed in 1977 that brought jobs
and revenue to Alaska.
----
As oil production from the Prudhoe Bay field declines, Alaskans are
hoping that natural gas will take over from oil.
---
An Alaska gas pipeline has long been sought as a critical component of
the nation's energy security.
---
The planned pipeline would have a daily capacity of 4 billion cubic
feet, or 113 million cubic meters, of natural gas, or almost 7 percent
of current U.S. consumption.
----
But the companies will have to overcome some huge hurdles, said
Christopher Ruppel, an energy analyst at Execution, a brokerage and
research firm.
---
"We've had a long record of Alaska pipeline projects coming out of
Alaska and Canada, and they have consistently been delayed because of
political opposition and rising costs," he said.
---
"The United States and Canada desperately need the gas. But the
question is, is it doable?"
---
The companies will need to secure more than 1,000 permits from local,
state and federal authorities in the United States and Canada, a
process that will probably take years.
---
They need to negotiate with native tribes along the pipeline's route
to secure the right of passage. If the oil pipeline is any guide, the
gas line will also require vast engineering feats.
---
But with higher prices, and a growing appetite for natural gas, the
economics of such a large project are starting to make sense for oil
companies.
---
The companies said the initial plan is to build a 2,000-mile pipeline
from the North Slope to the Canadian province of Alberta; that would
add to the total North American gas supply, freeing some Canadian gas
for export to the United States.
---
Eventually, the pipeline may be extended another 1,500 miles, to
Chicago.
"This will be a massive undertaking," said Doug Suttles, the president
of BP Alaska. "It is going to take the big team to get this going."

Today, gas reserves in Alaska are reinjected into oil fields or left
dormant because of a lack of export facilities to bring them to
consumers.

When Palin took office in late 2006, she interrupted pipeline
negotiations that her predecessor, Frank Murkowski, had been pursuing
with the North Slope oil operators BP, Conoco and ExxonMobil.

She started from scratch after criticizing the previous talks as not
being competitive enough, and sought to bring in new operators to
secure better terms for Alaska.
---
Her administration is evaluating a proposal made by a Canadian
pipeline operator, TransCanada.
---
The oil companies protested the delays and said the governor's
procedure was unrealistic.
---
Eschewing $500 million in potential subsidies from the state, BP and
ConocoPhillips declared Tuesday that the economics of natural gas have
reached the point that they can finance the pipeline on their own.

James Bowles, the president of Conoco Alaska, said that although the
companies would seek no state subsidies, they would try to meet
requirements outlined by Alaskan authorities, like offering local
delivery points on the pipeline to meet the natural gas requirements
of the state.
---
"This project is moving forward on its own," he said.
---
Palin welcomed the proposal, while stopping short of formally
endorsing it. She told reporters she would meet with executives from
the companies to find out more about the joint project. Still, she
added, "It sounds great for the state of Alaska."

The plan came as a surprise to Exxon, which said it was invited to
participate only a few days ago. The company will "evaluate all
options," according to Margaret Ross, an Exxon spokeswoman.

BP and Conoco said they would welcome Exxon's participation.
---
Many analysts have voiced concerns that natural gas prices would keep
rising as domestic demand grows and exports from Canada fall because
of increased consumption there.
---
Without a natural gas pipeline, the United States will increasingly
depend on imports of natural gas in liquefied form, a source that is
costly and potentially vulnerable to political instability in the
Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Greater demand is already pushing prices higher, and adding to
pressure to open deeper waters off the country's coast for
exploration.
---
Amy Myers Jaffe, an energy analyst at Rice University, said a gas
pipeline was badly needed, in addition to the liquefied natural gas
projects under consideration. "In the long-term, it's not going to
mean we are not going to need LNG, but we would need a lot more LNG if
Alaska does not happen," she said.

Natural gas consumption rose by 6.2 percent in 2007, to 23 trillion
cubic feet, from 21.7 trillion cubic feet in 2006, according to the
Energy Information Administration.

Natural gas prices, which averaged $2 a thousand cubic feet in the
1990s, have soared in the last decade. They recently traded at $9.74 a
thousand cubic feet on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

(CNN) -- The Iranian government is protesting remarks from Democratic
presidential candidate Hillary Clinton -- who said the United States
could "totally obliterate" Iran if it made a nuclear attack on Israel,
an Iranian news outlet reported on Thursday.

The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency said Iran sent a letter of
protest, dated Wednesday, to the United Nations and the U.N. Security

Clinton told ABC's "Good Morning America" that "I want the Iranians to
know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran (if it attacked
Israel)."

WASHINGTON - Barack Obama's problem winning votes from working-class
whites is showing no sign of going away, and their impression of him
is getting worse.

Those are ominous signals as he hopes for strong performances in the
coming week in Indiana and North Carolina primaries that would derail
the candidacy of Hillary Rodham Clinton, his rival for the Democratic
presidential nomination.

Those contests come as his candidacy has been rocked by renewed
attention to his volatile former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and
by his defeat in last month's Pennsylvania primary.

In an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll in April, 53 percent of whites
who have not completed college viewed Obama unfavorably, up a dozen
percentage points from November.
----
During that period, the numbers viewing Clinton and Republican
candidate John McCain negatively have stayed about even.
---
The April poll conducted before the Pennsylvania contest also showed
an overwhelming preference for Clinton over Obama among working-class
whites.
----
They favored her over him by 39 percentage points, compared to a 10-
point Obama lead among white college graduates.

Obama also did worse than Clinton among those less-educated voters
when matched up against Republican candidate John McCain.

"It's the stuff about his preacher ... and the thing he said about
Pennsylvania towns, how they turn to religion," Keith Wolfe, 41, a
supermarket food stocker from Parkville, Md., said in a follow-up
interview. "I don't think he'd be a really good leader."

Just before the Pennsylvania primary, Obama said many small-town
residents are bitter about their lives and turn for solace to religion
and guns.

Recent voting patterns underscore Obama's continued poor performance
with these voters, who are often pivotal in general election swing
states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

In Democratic primaries held on or before Super Tuesday, Feb. 5,
whites who have not finished college favored the New York senator by a
cumulative 59 percent to 32 percent, according to exit polls of voters
conducted for

In primaries since Feb. 5, that group has favored Clinton by 64
percent to 34 percent.

That includes Ohio and Pennsylvania, in which working-class whites
have favored Clinton by 44 and 41 percentage points respectively.

The AP-Yahoo poll shows less educated whites present a problem to
Obama in part because of who they are. Besides being poorer, they tend
to be older than white college graduates and Clinton has done strongly
with older white voters.

reluctance to embrace his bid to become the first black president, and
his failure to address their concerns about job losses and the

Terry Madonna, a political science professor at Franklin & Marshall
College in Lancaster, Pa., said Obama lost among working-class whites
in the state because his message of how this generation's time has
come did not address their economic needs.

"While it's incredibly motivating and passionate and compelling, it
lacks content," Madonna said. "Hillary would come in and relate to
them, talk about the specifics of her policy."

In video clips of past sermons, Wright has damned the United States
for its history of racism and accused the government of spreading the

Obama pollster Cornell Belcher said that while working-class whites
have favored Clinton, the fact that huge numbers of them and other
voters have participated in Democratic contests boded well for the
November election.
"I don't think there's going to be erosion in the fall of a core group
of Democratic voters," Belcher said.

While less educated whites tend to vote less frequently than better
educated voters, they are important because of their sheer number.

Democrats on a panel of adults questioned in November and April. It

and followed with online interviews.

People chosen for the study who had no Internet access were given it
