Hey following on from this thought I'd better ask separately.

My new drive is fine but all day and night i just noticed it is always "busy" - by that I mean silent for one second, then working hard for a few seconds, then pausing for a second, and so on.  Its not clicking or making weird noises - the sounds seem very legit hard drive sounds.

ANy thoughts?  My CPU and temperatures are very normal... How Can I find out what process is causing this... or maybe the drive is end of life and just dying?

It is not running any extended disk check... disks seem to be reporting fine. I've rebooted a few times and rebooted and run disk check.

cheers!  Andy

but it my be doing SMART surface tests? see Services->System, smart, Configure
You can try stop smartd, although the drive might be already instructed to do it nevertheless.
You can try also to unplug the network cable for a few minutes, to see if the activity is network deployed, and if the mumbling stops (this only applies if the hdd led blink, otherwise it is internal to the drive). You can also just powerup the drive outside of the box, no sata cable connected, and see if the mumbling also happens.
