Dear all,
I've received some initial feedback from ALMA folks that is quite encouraging! In fact it seems that our arguments are so persuasive that they traveled BACK IN TIME and several of our recommendations will be implemented in the upcoming Cycle 5 Call for Proposals (which should be released quite soon, I believe):
- "The 14 day restriction on specifying ToO has been removed."
- "The time limit on the length of continuous time monitoring has been removed. To our chagrin, it has been difficult to operate an observation for many hours without a mishap. If during a particularly long (say 8 hours) observation something goes wrong, the time will be capped at what was accomplished."
So, start planning those Cycle 5 time-domain proposals ahead of the rest of the pack!
I'm also told that "We will of course after discussion develop an 'International Science Team' response for discussion with our respective communities", which conveys to me that ALMA leadership takes our submission quite seriously.
Cheers,
Peter
