Dear all,
Hope you're all doing well. For those of us headed to DC next week, we wanted to highlight a few Water and Society events:
  1. Water and Society Social: Details shown below. Based on feedback from last year, we’re organizing the social outside the official conference venue. This will be a no-host event so everyone will be paying for their drinks/food individually. Stop by anytime during the two-hour window and meet others interested in water and society intersections.
Date: Wednesday, December 11th
Time: 5:00–7:00 PM ET
Location: Bar Chinois (455 I St NW, Washington, DC 20001)
  1. Water and Society Technical Committee breakfast will take place on Tuesday 7am at the Marriott Marquis, Dogwood. This is the "official" meeting of the technical committee where we'll share updates on committee business. All are welcome, particularly if you are interested in being actively involved within the technical committee.

  1. Water society sessions throughout the conference -- please see the attached flyer!
Looking forward to seeing some of you at AGU!

Greetings colleagues,

We are looking for graduate students, post-docs and, potentially, research faculty that are interested in joining the newly established Institute for Risk Management and Insurance Innovation (irmii.unc.edu) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  The Institute is focused on modeling and assessing the financial risk arising from a wide range of perils (e.g., drought/flood, extreme temperatures, pandemics, cyberattacks), and then developing improved approaches for managing them.  The Institute is supported by grants and contracts from federal and state agencies, as well as generous funding from roughly 40 corporate partners, and is engaged in a number of projects throughout the U.S.

Candidates should have excellent computational skills, a comfort with systems-based modeling and interests in interdisciplinary research.  A background in engineering, natural sciences, data sciences, economics and/or finance would be preferable, with any previous experience in modeling financial risk a definite plus.  Excellent written and oral presentation skills will also be important.

Graduate students and Post-docs will benefit from a vibrant research environment that includes the opportunity to work on interesting and contemporary research, often in collaboration with industry partners (e.g., insurance, reinsurance, hedge funds, ratings agencies), and developing interdisciplinary research expertise that will prepare them for careers in academia or industry.

Several more specialized opportunities may be available for research faculty seeking to develop their research and teaching portfolios.

The post-doc position announcement has been posted and can be viewed here:  https://unc.peopleadmin.com/postings/292231

Inquiries regarding graduate student, post-doc or research faculty positions a should be directed to ir...@unc.edu

Best,

Greg
