Dear Colleagues,
Paul Block, Ximing Cai, Hamid Moradkhani, Dave Watkins, and I are convening a session on advancing the effective use of hydroclimatic forecasts in water resources decision-making at AGU 2025. We encourage you to consider submitting an abstract to our session. Hope to see you at AGU 2025.
Session Description: Advances in hydroclimatic forecasting—from short-term to seasonal timescales—offer important opportunities for improving water resources management, climate adaptation, and resilience to extreme weather events. Yet, the uptake of these forecasts remains limited when they are not aligned with decision-making needs, institutional contexts, or when their benefits and risks are unclear. This session invites contributions that explore both technical advances and practical integration of hydroclimatic forecasts into decision-making, with a focus on:
- Improving forecast skill and lead time using emerging methods (e.g., machine learning, hybrid models)
- Quantifying and communicating uncertainty to enhance usability
- Co-producing forecast tools and information with stakeholders
- Bridging the gap between forecast products and institutional or operational decision-making
- Designing adaptive planning frameworks that incorporate forecasts across sectors
Best,
Majid
