Dear colleagues,

I am forwarding this message on behalf of Dr Ryan Hoult whom many of you would be familiar.  Please consider this interesting and important opportunity.

Kind regards,

Trevor

Dear AEES members,

The Civil and Environmental Engineering (GCE) group in the Institute of Mechanics, Materials, and Civil Engineering (iMMC) at UCLouvain would like to invite you to participate in the prediction of the response of two reinforced concrete (RC) walls subjected to cyclic flexural and torsional actions up to failure.

The two RC walls are U-shaped in cross-section and will be tested between May and June of 2022 in the Mechanical Testing, Structures, and Civil Engineering Laboratory (LEMSC). We welcome participants to predict the response of one or both units, and to submit a compulsory set of basic data or, optionally, a full set of information that includes more refined data. We also welcome any simulation approach, including hand calculations from methods defined in building codes, guidelines, published research, as well as numerical modelling. Participants can consist of individual or teams, where three categories are considered: practicing engineers, researchers, and students (up to and including doctoral level). As an incentive, a monetary reward of €1,300 will be attributed to the winning participant without distinction of the categories. An additional €500 Euro will be attributed to the best student participants.

A description of the design and test setup of the wall units is provided in the attachment. The rules for the UCLouvain 2022 blind prediction competition are also attached. This information, as well as other helpful information (i.e., prediction submission sheet, loading protocol, other given information) is provided on our website: https://uclouvain.be/en/research-institutes/immc/gce/blind-prediction.html

The website above will also be used for submitting predictions as well as a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, which will be regularly updated.

The deadline for the submission of the blind predictions is Friday August 13, 2022 at 11:59 PM (CEST). A summary of the test results and of the anonymised blind predictions will be presented during a session at the 3ECEES conference in early September 2022. An online live video session towards the end of September 2022, open to everyone, will release the results of the competition to the participants and announce the winners. This information will also be posted to the abovementioned website. Some of the winners will be invited to briefly present their modelling approach during the live session.

We would encourage you to please share this invitation with your colleagues and encourage them to participate. If you have any questions or queries, please use the following email: blind-pr...@uclouvain.be

We look forward to receiving your predictions!

Kind Regards,

Dr Ryan Hoult and Prof João Pacheco De Almeida
