Hi all, You all remember we've discussed about translating WordPress into Amharic. After all I found Google Translation Toolkit a perfect choice to work in group. I uploaded the .po file and started with few words already, Hope Fantaw will share us what he has done so far. If you guys visit this page once in a while and do few words, we will have a complete translation in short time. Thank you all.

Same here, can not get access.

Some thing to consider before we start:

Is "Google Translator Toolkit" a good tool and place?

Is there another place or tool which might be better?

Does "Google Translator Toolkit" has a good history?

Any idea about "Google Translator Toolkit" when it comes to future development and existence?

I hope it has many of the function we need and will stay there as long as we need it. But i will try to find more about it....to learn.

By the way a file is attached with some traslation. It went slow but sure. In some of it I have used what is ment instead of translating word by word. But please look at it in the bottom and correct me. Now when we have a common place, it will be more fun and and more correct since we will be at the same translating place.  //FT

Thank you for the good job you did Fantaw, I can see a lot done already, I will try to port it to our online version, and keep it consistent.

I will try to answer your question:

Is "Google Translator Toolkit" a good tool and place?

I think translation is a fairly straight forward task, all you need is a simple text editor, but in our case we demand something better than that, for example the input method is different, we need a software to handle that, we need to collaborate, for that we need an app, preferably a web app and so on.
Google Translation Toolkit is a perfect choice because it consists all those things, It's a a collaboration framework, has integrated Amharic input method that is both efficient and easy to use and generally using GTT is easy.

Is there another place or tool which might be better?

Not sure about this, but big projects like Wikipedia used this tool to translate, so i think that will boost it's reputation.

Does "Google Translator Toolkit" has a good history?

WordPress is translated at http://translate.wordpress.org/projects/wp. you will find Amharic with the version of you choice and translate there. at the moment 3.7.xand 3.7.x are active.

The translation at wordpress for version 3.8.x is 0%, we've done more than 20% at GTT, stick with the it and it will be easy to port back to official WP site project page then.

Except that you would be doing the same job twice and by the time you are done at GTT the po files at the official WP site may have changed several times and you would be working on an outdated copy.

Unless there is any other compelling reason I don't see the point.

Please don't make me wrong. I appreciate the effort but I have also seen a lot of wasted time and energy by not fallowing the proper procedure. 

I know a guy who translated the entire firefox in to Amharic but for some odd reason did not want to use the official repository. He did not get the whole point of an open source project. There is no need to invent the wheel. If there is some thing to improve you do improve it. You don't create a duplicate just for the sake of it.

Millions of professionals and lay men contribute to open source projects daily to create this echo system the world depends on so much today. There is no leader or owner. The only thing that keeps things from going bonkers is proper procedure.

And this is why we have so many experts but so little done.

On the Polyglots handbook (the tool you guys suggest and the official) version of the same tool you pointed us they specifically indicate to use Google Translation Toolkit to build the glossary. http://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook-draft/#translating.

This is the most simple thing anyone can do for a software package, let's not overthink it, I uploaded the .po version for WordPress 3.8.1, if we successfully finish this one maybe on the version 4 we might see few additional strings or not, the point is almost 99% of the translation from 3.8.1 will be used in 4 or 5 or 10. Like everything else, translation strings are re-usable. No one here try to re-invent the wheel. It's all what tool to use.

Once done, wherever you do it, you can import the translated .po file to Polyglots, immediately it'll become the official translation anyone can access, please refer the user handbook.

Polyglots, GTT, Poedit, Launchpad, Pootie, Lokalize .... all these are simply tools. Let's organize, choose the best tool and focus.

Last time I've seen most of those tools and found out google toolkit will make you translate faster, collaborate and the standard is the same.

With all due respect Fiseha a lot has been done by dedicated people and I think learning from that experience would only help the effort. My interest is to prevent fragmentation of effort which would be a disaster for a fledgling community like ours.

Some communities that have a strong political, financial and professional backing setup their own systems that often are improvements to upstream for their own purposes. In our case we have none of those and the best option to build an Ethiopian localized software echo system is to stick to the official guidelines and build on the work that is already done.   

Building the glossary which is not tied to any particular project and translating strings for particular project are completely different things. And even then that glossary already exists in many formats. 

If you need to build a local glossary the best way to do it is to use tools such as poedit to build a translation memory from an already translated terms within poedit itself (which was translated 100% in to Amharic but now fallen back) and programs such as gedit.

If you need to look up terms there is the computer glossary at http://am.wiktionary.org/wiki/computer_glossary (It is copy of the standard computer glossary developed by language and computer experts at AAU and Ethiopian Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (EICTDA) among others.)

I don't know if you follow from the start but what we've done so far was carefully examining all the tools, choose one, and go to work immediately, a pragmatic way which shows promise in such a short time.

I hope I won't frustrate you but it is all for the best. Though a bit out dated all the points in the link you provided are still valid. Especially to understand the process of translating an open source software. What is missing is this. http://translate.wordpress.org/getting-started which is specific to WP.

Mind you this is an attempt to set up a WP Amharic translation team. The team needs translators, validators and commiters. In which each role needs participants to have some skills. For example validators need to be good translators who has experience on previous translation. New translators will eventually sharpen their skills and become validators. Commiters need to be familiar with subversion.

Once setup properly it would be easy to churn-out quality Amharic other Ethiopian language software that is constantly improving. New translators get mentored to sharpen their understanding and skills.

The best thing about all this is you can work on a project as long as you wish and leave it when you get tired with the knowledge that some one else will continue where you left.

In my opinion we better use the official translation site when translating a specific CMS, OS or a SW program. As for WP, if there is a project started from before, it is good if someone provide a link here. By the way i have read the rules and procedure provided above from Feseha and Tegegne. Cheers. //FT

Hi good people

Fallowing the procedure the locals cods for wordpress is included in gotpress https://glotpress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/locales/locales.php and request for creation of the Amharic rosetta site has been submitted. When it is accepted it will most probably be http://am-et.wordpress.org.

Those who want to participate in translating wordpress need to register at wordpress.org. Once the resotta site is created we can submit what is done at google translate kit and compare with previous works for consistency and continue translating from there. As the translation progresses the Rosetta Amharic site becomes more and more Amharic to be a showcase.

Now we have access (limited yet) to the translation site. I have tried to translate few strings there and I don't wan't to be doing it again if it is already done. So if you send me the .po file then i will update it. The version priority seems to have changed since last and I will try to run the .po file against all versions. 

I still have limited access to am.wordpress.org pages and I will try to translate them as soon as I get access. 

If any of you are building a WP website in Amharic you can also add it as a show case and it would be a free advertisement which should be an incentive. 

WP Amharic can have it's own discussion forum and I will find out more about it.

Last but not least those who are interested to get involved in WP amharic translation need to register and if there is no objection I will add you as an Amharic team members.

I can manage debian installer which is important to keep Amharic in Ubuntu and other Debian derivatives but XFCE would really be an interesting project. I have done as much as possible in 4.xxx versions but since it has fallen back. Being a light weight windows manager it would breath life in to millions of old (XP and windows 95) PCs in Ethiopia that are infested with all kinds of viruses.

I run the po file against wordpress translation but unfortunately most strings are just copied from English. That is not really helpful. It is better to have a blank string than an english copied to where Amaric should be because you can not see what is translated and what is not translated. Strings that are not translated are quite ok since when WP encounters untranslated string it falls back to the original language until it is translated. That means there is no need at all to copy the original language.

Usually when you look for untranslated strings the program looks for blank translations if you fill up with the copy of the English it will not show up.

Please remove all untranslated strings and send me only the translated once.

Just to add some points.

except for the variables (please read the getext syntax) no English words should be in the translation. Not half Amharic, not half English. when one imports from po files it goes directly to translated and it corrupts the whole thing.  

One of the reasons why it is better to translate at WP translation site is it is possible to have suggestions and discuss until we are satisfied with the final translation then commit it.

After properly setting up the team I would like to pass it on to those who wish to spend more time on it since I will not be doing much translation since I have already allocated my available free time to other projects which I would love to get help. But if I don't I won't complain.

I can manage debian installer which is important to keep Amharic in Ubuntu and other Debian derivatives but XFCE would really be an interesting project. I have done as much as possible in 4.xxx versions but since it has fallen back. Being a light weight windows manager it would breath life in to millions of old (XP and windows 95) PCs in Ethiopia that are infested with all kinds of viruses.

I hope I won't frustrate you but it is all for the best. Though a bit out dated all the points in the link you provided are still valid. Mind you this is an attempt to set up a WP Amharic translation team. The team needs translators, validators and commiters. In which each role needs participants to have some skills. For example validators need to be good translators who has experience on previous translation. New translators will eventually sharpen their skills and become validators. Commiters need to be familiar with subversion.

Once setup properly it would be easy to churn-out quality Amharic other Ethiopian language software that is constantly improving. New translators get mentored to sharpen their understanding and skills.

The best thing about all this is you can work on a project as long as you wish and leave it when you get tired with the knowledge that some one else will continue where you left.

On the Polyglots handbook (the tool you guys suggest and the official) version of the same tool you pointed us they specifically indicate to use Google Translation Toolkit to build the glossary. http://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/handbook-draft/#translating.

This is the most simple thing anyone can do for a software package, let's not overthink it, I uploaded the .po version for WordPress 3.8.1, if we successfully finish this one maybe on the version 4 we might see few additional strings or not, the point is almost 99% of the translation from 3.8.1 will be used in 4 or 5 or 10. Like everything else, translation strings are re-usable. No one here try to re-invent the wheel. It's all what tool to use.

Once done, wherever you do it, you can import the translated .po file to Polyglots, immediately it'll become the official translation anyone can access, please refer the user handbook.

Polyglots, GTT, Poedit, Launchpad, Pootie, Lokalize .... all these are simply tools. Let's organize, choose the best tool and focus.

Last time I've seen most of those tools and found out google toolkit will make you translate faster, collaborate and the standard is the same.
