When you look at the files do you see the rtf folder? That has you chapters and scenes. Use my computer to view the files on the thumb drive.

Hi,
I saved several ywriter projects to a thumb drive in 2009. My computer was dying at the time. I don't have that old computer any longer. I believe I have opened these files since then and they worked on other computers. So I wasn't worried. I tried to open them from the thumb drive to my new lap top, on which I have downloaded the newest ywriter. I cannot open my old projects.

The prompt reads ! cannot load your project: there is no RTF5 folder in the project path. (this vital folder holds all the files iwth your scene content, and must be in the same location as your YW5 project file.) If you're trying to load a project form a Zip archive, you must extract the entire archive first.

When I look at the different properties, I see the different projects are different sizes, one is 36K, another is 32KB so there must be something in them right? It has been a long time so I don't remember how I saved these files, but knowing me, I checked to see if I could open them on another computer.

Help???
Thanks,
Becca (who will be using Word from now on in fear).

2009? I'm guessing they're yw4 projects? If so, you need to use Project - Import into New Project - Import yWriter4 project.

I'd like to add to the initial question asked, because, it's basically what I typed in that brought me to the already posted question.

I downloaded yWriter6. The files I saved say yWriter5, and, there is no option for following your instructions for yWriter5. So, is there something else that can be done? Please and thank you.

Oh, and, just to clarify, I did try anyway.  More than once. No dice.

That's a ywriter5 project, but a project consists of this:

Aprojectname.yw5
RTF5 <- a folder where your scene content is.

If you only have the yw5 file shown above, you don't have a copy of the scene content. Copying the yw5 file anywhere and trying to open it won't work, unless you copy the RTF5 folder with it.

A writer project technically consists of the entire folder it's saved in - that's what should be backed up, including all the subfolders.

The only other place to look is if you copied across any autobackups or zip files. A full autobackup always includes the RTF5.

Cheers

I have the same problem.

Went to open a yW5 file that I've been using happily in yW6.

I have not moved or copied anything.

The software opens but without any of the data. RTF file is full and scene last created is intact. Where the MyProject file should be all I have is MyProject.yw5.lock and MyProject.V5.bak.

Thanks

I have two files for each project, which were saved when II elected to save the project. There was no file folder involved. Just two different files. One ends in .ywriter5 and the other one which claims to be a yWriter5 file ends in .bak. That is all there is.

But, according to what you said before, it should be possible to at least try to import the old information and make it a new project, and, that is not possible. Because, it does not even give an option for doing so for .ywriter5 files.

Why wouldn't it be possible? Why isn't that even an option? That's what I'd like to know. And, why wouldn't the yWriter5 save projects in a manner where they can be used, ever again. That's what else I'd like to know.

But, since it didn't save it in a usable way and since I can't import it into yWriter again and try to salvage any part of several stories, is there anything else that can be done?

Thank you.

I feel like something is missing in terms of information. Can you share screenshots of what happens when you try to open the project, the folder where it's saved, etc.?
