i shared an attempt to make a nice logo for yesod to this thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/yesodweb/browse_thread/thread/b5dabd0b405f127a/d1a23d8299101019

now i created a nicer one (imho) and now i put it in a thread of its

some background info:
* the fonts are all free-as-in-freedom (dejavu sans and gyre pallega)
* the "Y" is not in the font but custom made
* i try to embed the foundation meaning of the word 'yesod' into the
the logo
* i used inkscape to make it, so all is svg, super easy to change
colors etc.
* this is a draft, if anyone wants to use this then let me know so i
can finalize it properly and supply SVGs of the final version.

please comment on it.

looks nice!

One thing that struck me is that the Y in Yesod closely resembles an
upside-down lambda. Haskellers love lambdas! Though the lambda used in
the haskell.org logo is of a different style. Maybe try a version
using that lambda but upside down? Might communicate "haskell" a bit
more.

I think I can save us all a lot of time. We'll just take the logo from
haskell.org and flip it vertically. Win!

Love it. It does look quite fast, but I tried sketching it a little
'slower' and it doesn't look nearly as nice.

But maybe I just can't sketch very well.

wonderful!

As someone pointed out, it would be great to have a small icon-like
version - I think we can basically just use the 'Y' from this for
that.

it's still in drafting stage.. if this is considered 'the way forward'
with the logo, then i will make a better version and try out some more
time consuming tricks to make it nicer.

@everyone: please let me know if you think if you prefer this "haskell-

Hi

I developed these ideas for the logo, I tried to relate yesod - haskell - and web.
The>Y= (mirror of the haskell logo) was originally proposed by Darrin.

The top middle one, specifically the ">YE" version, is perfect in every way. It's square, simple, and cleverly plays homage to Haskell. Print it!

Thanks Francisco and cies!
I really like the middle icon from Francisoco's also. I think the
upper-left icon could be improved by moving the parallel lines farther
down. 1 of those 2 should make a great icon.

For the full name, which we can use on the Yesod website, I like the
readability of cies logo, except for the 'd' - if we could use the 'd'
from Franciscos that would be awesome.

Right now we are copying the grey colors from the Haskell website,
which is a great baseline. I don't know if we need to settle on any
official colors - we could simply change colors to suit the
colorscheme of a given website.

i dont like the lower case 'd' in an otherwise uppercase word.
i'll make sure the "D" is more distinguishable as such in a later

Agreed.

I still like your original idea of incorporating the meaning of yesod
as "foundation". UM Though, I don't really have a good idea how. Maybe
place the Yesod in between horizontal lines. Giving it a feel of "this
makes a solid brick"?

"massive solid brick" bites the speedy back-to-the-future'ish look of
the haskell-logo-derivate.

massive solid brick is not something i would like to a logo anyway.
it should be fresh and airy no matter what :)

i will accept any direction this discussion takes, and i like the
haskell-logo-derivate direction..
but my first attempt (http://i.imgur.com/EweVc.png) looks a lot more
professional in my opinion (while the lambda is there as an eye-wink
to the incrowd)

For Rails, it is much more useful to have a rail-road track in the
logo. However, only existing uses of Yesod and Hebrew speakers know
that it means foundation. Many of the most successful logos (Nike,
etc) don't give the viewer a direct connection with meaning. If
someone wants to try a design incorporating more meaning that is
great, but it isn't a requirement.

yesod is a framework "a foundation" in "haskell". that's how i
understand it.

"foundation" is more shown in the first logo (draft: http://i.imgur.com/EweVc.png)
"haskell" is emphasized in the second (draft: http://i.imgur.com/H8zoS.png)

i think it is a good idea to pick on one of two emphases/directions
and make it into something nice.

Hi,

Apologize by the delay, but I don't have much time. I am not an English speaker and I hope not to cause misunderstandings because my use of the language.

First of all, I don't want that the logo be a personal competence or something like that, and I want for Yesod the best independent if it is the proposal I made or not, it just that, a proposal and it's the reason that I send also the source file if someone wanted it as start point. I liked the first Cies logo and without of doubt is very professional but as a haskeller I also want Yesod be identified with Haskell, and I liked the Darrin idea of the >Y= and I tried to put on an image and it was the main inspiration for the proposal.

About the massive solid brick, respectfully, I prefer the lowercase 'd' on the logo more than the uppercase D because the word Yesod appears  capitalized and not in all caps. Another point of view is that the logo is in small caps, but for me is difficult to distinguish that is not an O but a D then I read YESOO (Yesoo) instead of YESOD (Yesod). The problem is due the straight form of the logo letters, I tried, as Cies, to get an unambiguous capital D preserving the style, but always it resembled an O, and, in my opinion stills resembling an O.

On the other hand, I think to put the E on the >Y=  logo with lines on two senses: first, the letter E for Yesod and second, the equivalence sign.  In the Dijkstra and Feijen formalization of logic the central place is given to the equivalence, as is remarked by Lincoln A. Wallen article: On Form, Formalism and Equivalence, " Beauty is our business: a birthday salute to Edsger W. Dijkstra". I think on Yesod for Web development is as the equivalence symbol for the Dijkstra and Feijen formalization. Also because not only is related to discrete math but with the Dijkstra formalism for program correctness. This also make me to reflect on the Cies words massive solid brick, Yesod is solid bricks for web development  (Type-Safety, simplicity, robustness, elegance, high performance, etc.).

Greg, I wanted so long time ago contribute with Yesod and I am very happy that my proposal was take in account.

Sincerely

Francisco

Oh yeah sorry for double posting, but to expand on my ideas somewhat: the black in the image kinda forms a mountain, which I can emphasize by using different shapes to form the Y and Lambda. Also, there are two arrows (pointing right) hidden in the symbols, which could also be a theme. Would like to know what direction we want to take it so I could come up with more focussed proposals.

I really like this direction.

I tried modding it a little (sorry about the artifacts, I'm not very good with GIMP). I took the lambda and slid it downward somewhat, as well as scaling it down relative to the Y.

I think I know what you mean by the two hidden arrows; if they are where I think they are, then I think sliding and scaling the lambda puts these arrows on the same line (?).

http://i.imgur.com/5gJJs.png

PS I tried leaving the right side of the Y black, but I couldn't figure out how to force GIMP to treat it as a separate region.

What do you think about doing the same thing, but just keeping the lambda a bit shorter than the y?
http://i.imgur.com/dluvZ.png

My reasoning is that Haskell is a foundation, but the main attraction is Yesod. Also, just trimming a bit off the top of the lambda retains the arrows.

The community has really shined here to help us out. Thanks everyone
for the amazing logos, and the great collaboration going on here!

cies, Bas, & Anthropornis, thank you for the elegant Yesod logos! I
agree with cies that these submissions are "more professional", but I
don't think that has to be a requirement for us.
There seemed to be an very positive response to the "upside-down
Haskell" logo that Corey imagined and cies and Francisco realized. I
think the single 'Y' version is professional enough, especially if we
play with the colors.

I do like the readability of cies latest upside-down Haskell logo with
lower case letters, but I agree with cies that it is less striking.
Fransisco points out that an uppercase 'D' ends up looking like YESOO
(Yesoo), so I think a lowercase 'd' is best. The hard part is then the
's'. When the 's' is jagged, I think it sticks out too much. I really
like the original 's' that cies had: http://i.imgur.com/H8zoS.png. I
also like how the rest of the letters are slightly above the Y in that
image. I think if that is paired with Francisco's lowercase 'd'
concept we will have an awesome and readable full "Yesod" logo.

The single 'Y' from that logo is also great, and should scale down to
a recognizeable 'Y' very easily, whereas I see that as more
problematic for the other suggested logos. I think the single 'Y' can
look as professional as you want it to if you are concerned about
that. The colors can be adjusted to match the site and it can
otherwise be given more polish (see the logo for the Snap Framework).

Does this seem good?

i worked a bit into the proposed directions:

http://i.imgur.com/tGDoT.png

improvements:
* more clear "D"
* more focus on "foundation"
* a logo
* blending the haskell logo better with more curvy letters that make up YESOD

i feel that the text-free-logos, while maybe nice for favicons, are over the top to have next to the YESOD logo.

besides that i really like the work.

feedback is very welcome.

if this direction is cool with y'all, i want to give it one more iteration in an attempt to add some 'bling' to it. :)

to me the little hooks (that are the same as the jabs into the 'E' and 'S') really din the logo together.

now the "Y"-of-haskell-lamba-origin fits with the rest of the logo, it becomes a thing of it's own, and the 'D' is so freaking obviously 'D' :)
i feel with the jabs there is something to look at, some clear identity thingy, that makes a logo stand out.
