Time and tide wait for no man, as the ancient saying goes....
{This is a parallel - re-post from my Kwick Kleen Forum posts. I am posting here to help keep the conversation going about all that is fine furniture finishing and refinishing.}

Well, as the clock winds down on Kwick Kleen, I think we shouldn't ignore the elephant in the room. What is to become of this forum? To date, I have not been contacted by anyone to discuss its future. Dave had indicated to me that the new owners did intend to continue it, but other than that brief conversation with Dave, there has been no other discussions that I know of.

And what about you? Our discussion group has been more active at times. I have always viewed it as a learning and information sharing group. Dave, of course, hoped that it would lead to product sales. I never saw a conflict there! Do you think we should continue, or just fold this tent up and go on down the road? Your input is greatly needed and much appreciated. Please post here or contact me via my personal email at t...@historicinteriors.com to share your views.

In the past, I have also sometimes parallel posted to my own forum,https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/woodfinishingguide. This was for a couple of reasons, but mostly because it was more controllable than this format. We did expand our readership, but it was a lot of trouble to run both groups. Is there enough interest to re-energize the Woodfinishing Guide?

As this may be my last post, please let me say a profound Thank You! to all who have stayed with me over the years. One of the most pleasurable business experiences I could have ever imagined was that after over 12 years beyond my Minuteman days, I still get calls and notes from students and friends made then. In fact, seldom does a week go by that I don't hear from one of you. As an old teacher, that means a lot to me. Thanks! And of course, to Dave and Sharlot White, adieu my hale and hearty good friends. Enjoy your time together and enjoy your retirement. You've earned it.

So, what's next? Who knows. But, Tout vient ß qui sait attendre.

All things come to he who waits.

The full poem goes like this:

'Ah, all things come to those who wait,'
(I say these words to make me glad),
But something answers soft and sad,
'They come, but often come too late.'

Tim,
This is only one email I have received in a long time.   I think it a good thing to keep it up and if you are looking for ideas, I'd be glad to chat with you.

Thanks for the input, Jeff

I was informed directly by the new KK owners that they did indeed want to keep the Forum (Talk to Tim) going. Dave White also told me the same thing the morning he called me to say he 'had to quit' and was going to sell the business. I had one or two emails from them confirming this, and a phone call or two. Then, they zapped the forum from the web and I have not heard from anybody since. It has been several months now since I have heard anything. Sooooooooo. My best guess is that they were not sincere in wanting to keep the forum going. In fact, my initial gut reaction was that they had bought out a competitor and fully intended to push it into the ditch. So far, I'm right.

I'm still available through this group and am happy to answer questions whenever I can. Just ask!

Another sad ending to a good old company.  Wish it weren't a common story, but it is.

So in the absence of the Forum, Tim, what is the best way to benefit from your expertise and generally stay in touch?

Yep, I really miss it as well. It was a good place to give and get info. and helpful tips.  Flop-strip did put up there "comparable" strippers for those of you in need to replace your Kwick Kleen strippers.... and of course, the pricing has gone up.  Looks like its' back to blending for us after I run out of my 18 month supply of remover.  Had to borrow money to buy out the last of Dave's production, but obviously it was well worth it after looking at pricing.

I did one last year....you should plan on several hours just for removal and installation of hardware...namely the door...even more if there are windows...Don't even bid out the phone system...let someone else deal with wires and trying to make it work....I was able to strip it by hand...too big and heavy for me and my overflow.....had to reveneer one side that was sitting against a wall...other than that it is pretty easy to work on if your shop has the height.  Also bid high on pick up and delivery....it was a bear to lug around.

Hi All:

This group has become very active all of a sudden!  Thanks!  I'm trying to figure out how to handle it, so please be patient with me as I go.

FYI, I have the group set so that all posts have to be moderated (approved) by me before they can go live. So if you've tried to post or email, that might be why you are not having an 'instant' response. Again, please bear with me while I figure this all out.

AND, THANKS for keeping this going. I'll have some more info later next week.

Tim, I got an invitation for what appears to be a Yahoo Group that you moderate.  Is this legitimate?  It wants to know my birthday to sign up...I've not been sharing that generally because of identity fraud concerns.  Any other way?

Thanks for working on this!!

Greg:

I think it is legitimate, but I'm not actually there, yet. One of our
fellow subscribers/readers grabbed the name for the Yahoo groups site
for us. He has emailed to tell me what he is doing and says that if/as
soon as I participate he will turn it over to my moderation. I thank him
for his efforts but I'm still not sure where/how I'm going to handle all
this.

So for now, maybe just stay with the Google Group you're using.

Did a few of those phone booths in my "youth", ha, ha.  As said sub out the wire work if they are trying to get it functional.  Heavy panels requiring lots of moving, reassembly, etc., so plan on healthy upcharges for your services.  Last one I did was from a fairly elaborate train stations set-up.  I think we were in the $2000 to $2500 range on that one and that was back in 2002.  Not sure what I'd be charging on that one now....  On, the stocking up with stripper thing.... been through this with soooo many companies over the years I always evaluate what items are going to "hurt" my production the most, at least until I can find substitutes, and stock up.  Guys in my shop still kid me about having old Minuteman and even Star Chemical stuff.
