I have and installation of weewx on my new build of Debian Jessie. I think it is installed correctly but am not sure. I am using the Oregon Scientific wmr200a unit. It was working on the previous install of ubuntu. I an getting and error in the /var/log/user.log file about ever three minutes. The Santa page has not changed to show my changes to location or name either.

I'm not sure what that error is, but it has nothing to do with weewx. It's being emitted by Qt (a user-interface library).

The log you want is /var/log/syslog (not /var/log/user.log). See what's in there.

After checking both logs they are putting the same messages in both logs. I dont understand
What else could I look at to find out what is happening? Thanks.

Hi,

Not that I think that I will have the answer, but in terms of debugging your weewx install it would help a lot to see the weewx log entries from weewx startup. Suggest you stop weewx, edit weewx.conf and set debug=1, save weewx.conf and then start weewx. Monitor the file that weewx logs to (/var/log/syslog by default) and once a couple of archive_periods have passed (max 30 minutes unless you have a really long archive period) take a copy of the log from when weex started and post it here. Don't take anything out of the log, post it all.

Stop weewx running.

Do you still get the message??  If you do then clearly this has nothing to do with weewx - and the best way of debugging the issue will then be to forget about weewx until you have solved the basic Ubuntu installation!!!  Disable the startup daemon so weewx won't start when you reboot, and just debug the base Ubuntu installation.

If you get no messages when weewx is not running, but you do when it is then do what gary said and set debug=1 in weewx.conf and post a full log - ideally from 5 minutes before starting until 3 or 4 archive intervals have passed.  Do not edit this log file snippet.

Agree with the other replies.

A few comments:
  • there is a lot of stuff in a debian installation, each piece logs stuff.  Weewx does not control what other apps log.
  • is there a 'weewx' problem you're trying to report ?  If not, you're asking in the wrong place.
  • google is your friend - did you try some google searches ?
  • you didn't tell us anything about your computer hardware.  Debian runs on a lot of kinds of gear.  Are you serial ?  USB ?  x86_64 ?  ARM ?
That said, I googled for "org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper: QDBusConnection: system D-Bus connection" and the third hit I got pointed to a discussion that probably is your solution.

Check out https://m.reddit.com/r/debian/comments/4d4qfs/crashing_after_84_upgrade/ and read down a bit.  Turning off the KDE power management functions quieted down the log messages for that person...

Thank you. I guess it is obvious that I am classed as a noob. The post and messages seem to indicate that the problem is in KDE Power module and not in other programs so I will try to find out more on that before I work on my Weewx problems.

Another person replied that it probably is Debian that is the problem and he pointed to a page explaining that it might be the power feature in KDE that is the problem.

OK Thanks Vince. I went to the power manager and turned off everything that was checked and for the last few minutes there is no more entries. I think that fixed that error. Now to restart weewx and see if we get anything there.

Oh the log that was shown was supposed to be a seperate log for weewx only but I guess it did not work.

Thanks for the help on this one. I did find that the problem described was not a weewx problem but a power management problem with the new Dabien install. I turned off and unchecked all items in the power icon and now the error has stopped coming up on the syslog. I will post another question on the error I have now on the weewx.
