The command as given in the instructions is:
sudo dpkg -i weewx_3.6.2-1_all.deb

unless you had renamed the file somehow.  If you had copied/renamed the original file that could be the cause of your problem.  Try with the original file as per instructions.

Whether it's a vehicle handbook, wiring diagram or software user guide RTFM has the same meaning .....

Weewx is software - electronics is hardware - firmware sits in the middle ...... RTFM applies to all .....

Mechanics need skills to recognise nuts from bolts
Engineers need skils
Software engineers, who used to be called programmers, need skills
Keeping systems running 24/7 takes patience.  Recovering from breakdown takes forethought and planning before the catastrophe hits.  Taking on a computer controlled 24/7 weather station may take more than just "trying a hand with electronics"!!!!

The skills are all different, the manuals are all different

You may find that you will also need to read manuals or do online courses for computers, Linux, housekeeping, systems etc etc etc .......

Have fun, enjoy, and keep on RTFMs .... over and over again ....

Yes, Andrew... am realising that this SoftWare thing is not as the Mechanicals things is... u guys rock with the key board and mice - what we do with the Tools...
world apart... but i would try giving ur ideas a shot... till at least i cover my requirement of Software...
By the way "RTFM" is one new abbreviation i learnt from this group... along with Software..... 😂🤗

You will find that slow and steady works best.  When changing anything (software or hardware) try as hard as possible to change only one thing at a time, then check and test that change before changing something else.

Computers do not really have the equivalent of the mechanic's proverbial hammer, and a brute force approach rarely works - let computers bring out the more delicate approaches using tickles and tweeks!!!!!

i think i'm falling at the first hurdle :(   how do i actually download the package to the pi in the first place?

dpkg -i weewx_3.6.2-1_all.deb

gets the same error you had...

i know the package is here though: http://weewx.com/downloads/weewx_3.6.2-1_all.deb

You probably need to go down a more 'auto' path.

Open a terminal then visit http://weewx.com/docs/apt-get.htm and go through the steps outlined there.

Andy,

I did a fresh install on a Pi3 the other night and I can upload it to Dropbox if you just want to burn a working image to an SD card.

I wish I'd found that a week ago.  I installed lynx on my RPi3 and got it that way. I had installed Raspbian without a GUI.

Interesting.

That made me go and have a look at the installation page on the main site, and follow the example links. In particular the deb and set-up ones.

http://www.weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm#installing

The linked pages outline the terminal commands used to install the package, but don't list the required command to fetch the package in the first instance. An added bonus would be that'd the downloaded package would be available in the same terminal as the installation commands that follow.
The apt-get page at http://weewx.com/docs/apt-get.htm does this,

For the deb - dpkg - page, two examples would be

wget http://weewx.com/downloads/weewx_x.x.x-x_all.deb
or...
curl -o weewx_3.6.2-1_all.deb  http://weewx.com/downloads/weewx_3.6.2-1_all.deb

It would probably make sense, as well as being helpful and consistent, to add at least one of those command examples to those pages. (wget, and even curl, should be available on all distros)

Someone should contact the boss(es) and make the suggestion :-)) (Flunky alert here.)

Seeing as I'm here - Note to Andy, Glad it worked!

As a further note.

It would also make sense, and be consistent, if the link to the 'apt-get page' http://www.weewx.com/docs/apt-get.htm was also included with those 'installing' links in the documentation, at http://www.weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm#installation_methods
