Dear Wandboard team

any chance to see an Ubuntu 14.04 image for Wandboard? It's a LTS release, therefore it would be great to make it available, especially with enabled 3D features.

Best

Have you seen Robert Nelsons Image here:

?

I haven't tested it, though.

apparently, a 'new' Ubuntu 12.04.3 armel was released on 16th May. But no Ubuntu 14.04 - why?

Almost 2 months are gone.

Dear Wandboard team

do you have any plan to release a new Linux ISO for Wandboard, specifically a rebase to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS armhf?
Kind regards

I also would like to have the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS armhf image file for the wandboard. (prepared by the wandboard team)

Also, can you also tell us how to prepare that image so next time, we don't have to wait many months...

Thanks

Did somebody try the images from http://www.armhf.com/download/ ?
I found Ubuntu 12.04.3 from Wandboard.org is kind of sluggish. Is Debian Wheezy a better choice for such kind of h/w?

I've only used their rootfs which is kind of handy.  Haven't tried the image.

I tried them, but of course vivante GPU acceleration is missing.
That's why I've done my request of a full Ubuntu 14.04 image

I propose again the question:

since we are in September and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is already stable, is there any chance to see an update image of Ubuntu Linux featuring the latest version and possibly with armhf and 3D GPU acceleration built-in?
I saw the Android 4.4 update, then why isn't possible to have also an updated Ubuntu version?
That would be an interesting update for the Wandboard, which will improve its usage.

Wandboard (Quad) is still one of the fastest low-cost platforms available on the market, but without support, competitors gain a significant advantage (Hardkernel's Odroid, RadxaRock).

I'm also looking forward for the same. Based on Robert Nelson's image and guide lines, I'm able to get Ubuntu 14.04 running on my Wandboard. One of the main issues is, my screen goes blank when Xserver starts running. I tried Gnome and Lunbuntu, but no luck so far. Also Vivante driver is not loaded automatically. I tried loading it manually, but still the screen is blank. Before that I tried Ubuntu 12.04 LTS from Wandboard official site, but I didn't like it, it is so sluggish. I plan to pick the rootfs from Cubox-i forums. They seem to be having Ubuntu 14.04 LTS running fine on it with Graphical interface.

I can also run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my Wandboard (thanks to Robert Nelson's work), but 3D GPU acceleration drivers/modules are missing. That means: no OpenCL, no fast OpenGL rendering, slow speed in FullHD video play.

Would you like to share your rootfs? I'm trying to fix the blank screen issue. If that is resolved, may be we can try Vivante driver from FSL.

Thanks Michele. I started with the same. I have trouble with it after installing "Gnome", even "Lubuntu". As it is doesn't have any. How did you get Gnome or someother Graphical interface working on it?

btw:

I just rolled in some vivante changes from B. Scott Michel

https://github.com/RobertCNelson/linux-dev/commit/6e8a23ab3e2afd8a9aa319fb8438d88a099709f1

(head of master branch of linux-dev)

it "might" be enough to get userspace binaries to work..... (fingers
crossed, only boot tested it)

without Xorg modules for Vivante, it's not possible to test it under X11 :(

I rebuilt everything based on your instructions and used kernel linux-dev where you have checked in these vivante changes. Still I have trouble getting the screen working after installing "ubuntu desktop". I tried using the xorg.conf file from pre-built ubuntu 12.04 image available on wandboard official site. I installed fbdev as well. Now I see the error " Failed to load module "vivante" (module does not exist, 0)" in "Xorg.0.log". Any help?

Michele Adduci

the error "Failed to load module 'vivante'" happens because there are no updated Xorg modules for Vivante GPU.
The available ones are working only for older versions of Xorg (< 1.13).

Is it possible to go back to Xorg < 1.13?

Well, Xorg is part of base repositories of Ubuntu. the working version of Xorg for Wanboard is the one contained in Ubuntu 11.10/12.04. But I don't know if it would ever work with newer versions of Ubuntu itself: the API changed drastically.

I thought of giving it a try and started with xserver-core and xserver-common versions 1.12.99. There are lots of dependencies. May not be worth trying. May be wait for Xorg to support Vivante on 1.14+  release.

+1000 for an Ubuntu armhf image with fully functioning 3D acceleration.
The fact that this doesn't exist has made the Wandboard absolutely useless for me, its just collecting dust on the shelf.

So have you bugged freescale and vivantee? remember wandboard gets it
from them..

Wandboard is a bigger customer of them so they can get these things from Freescale, a normal human being has no chance of getting any drivers from them or any other support material.

Laughs, one "big" customer doesn't always work either <cough> bb.org
</cough>... Things seem to work better when you 1000's of little guys
using a big guys (wandboard) board and complain directly to the
source..

Wasn't really complaining, just said that I would really really need this.
There have been several threads in the Freescale forums about stuff like
this, they dont give a shit.

We have 1.15 working with 3.10.17-1.0.0 BSP on Yocto Project. So it is
fully compatible with it. Xorg 1.16 not yet.

Could you share your xorg module?

Freescale's official account replied me some days ago that they will look further in this issue.
They have announced more products based on I.MX6 and it would be dumb to drop the support for those chips

I've found this, googling around: http://www.solid-run.com/community/topic777-40.html#p13535

The user used etna-viv to get GPU working on kernel 3.10.17 (but I guess, it might work on mainline too?).

Perhaps it helps to accelerate this big lack for I.MX6 chips

Is it possible to skip X11 in Ubuntu? Have you tried this approach?

at the moment, there aren't stable replacement for X11 (aka: no DirectFB desktop environment).
The point is that without X11 (and then a good xorg-vivante-module), GPU acceleration under X will never work.
Without this module, desktop runs always slowly.
