Got him back from the shop where I had his engine rebuilt.   He really likes to take off. Is it possible something with the transmission would cause this runaway raceway behavior,  perhaps low on fluid?
Let me know,

At first I thought you were joking, but then I realized you may actually be serious.  Low fluid would seize up your transmission in time so I doubt that's the problem.  Do you have to hold the brake in order to prevent Herbie from rolling forward - even though you also have the clutch pushed all the way in?  Sounds to me possibly like a maladjusted clutch or something didn't get installed correctly from the flywheel forward.

Kyle, I more detailed description of the problem would be helpful.  I have not been following your rebuild but is this a semi-auto bug?

In gears 1-4, he accelerates pretty much, on his own.

He doesn't rev up at idle, nor does he accelerate in reverse (thankfully)

All that is old news, though so it matters not much anymore.

This morning, he caught on fire.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre progression of posts I've ever
read on the vintagvw listserv. I'm sorry that we couldn't help you in time
to prevent a fire, however for future reference if you are driving any
vehicle that exhibits symptoms of accelerating on its own, the best course
of action was, has, and always will be to shut the darn thing off and don't
drive it until you or a prefessional can fix the problem.

I would say that the shop that did the work is liable because obviously
something wasn't reassembled correctly and I'm sincerely sorry for your
loss.

Unfortunately,

We are sorely lacking on professionals in my area.  It is not unheard of for shops in these parts to charge $65 an hour and not stand behind their work.

It is a problem, to be sure.  It would be best rectified if I had my own garage and time.  These are two luxuries I just don't have.

I am with you NQ- that was a bizarre progression of posts.  I would be going back to the shop and asking to be made whole for your loss.  If they don't back their work up, I would consider an attorney or small claims court at the very least.
