Dear VESTA creators/users,

When I open a structure in VESTA-x86_64 vers 3.1.6. the program crashes (becomes non-responsive). I have tried with POSCAR and .vesta files.

I use fedora 17. The old version 2.1.6 works fine.

When I open VESTA I get the following info, maybe it is relevant:

OpenGL version: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.4
Video configuration: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile
Maximum supported width and height of the viewport: 16384 x 16384
OpenGL depth buffer bit: 24

Is there anything I should update?

Thank you for your answer, and for providing this great software free of charge.

Regards,
Lars

I thought I'd add my experience to this thread, since I'm experiencing the same issue. When I open a structure in VESTA-i686 v3.1.7 the processor goes crazy up to 99% usage and the application goes non-responsive. I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 32-bit. I get the following info from VESTA:

OpenGL version: 3.0 Mesa 9.2.1
Video configuration: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2
Maximum supported width and height of the viewport: 16384 x 16384
OpenGL depth buffer bit: 24

I'm running Intel drivers for integrated HD 3000 graphics, OpenGL support comes from Mesa.

Cheers,
Greg

Dear Lars and Greg,

Thank you for reporting.
Unfortunately, the bug is probably in the OpenGL driver, and I cannot debug the program unless I own the same hardware.

I would greatly appreciate if you can compile the following program (ApiTrace), run VESTA on top of it, and send me the output file of ApiTrace when VESTA crashed.

http://apitrace.github.io/

In the output file of ApiTrace, I might be able to find a way to workaround a bug in the video driver by looking at the last OpenGL call before VESTA crash.

Best regards,
Koichi

P.S. For users of desktop computers, I strongly recommend discrete video cards of nVIDIA. They provides the most robust and reliable OpenGL drivers.

Thank you for the reply.

I upgraded to Fedora 19 a few months ago and the problem went away. I can use the latest version as of 01.18.14 with no problems. The openGL drivers probably updated along with Fedora version. So, I unfortunately cannot help you with diagnosing the problem.

Lars

Dear Lars,

That's very good to know.

Thank you!

Dear Koichi, konnichiwa

I am having the same problem reported by Lars. My version is 3.4.0 64bits built Jan 8, 2017. Vesta freezes when I try to open a .vasp or .vesta file. It only opens the file when I pass the filename in the command line, as in

$ vesta example.vasp

but then when I try to open any menu it freezes right away. The same thing happens when I open two or more files using the command line and try to change tabs. Upgrading my whole system (Centos 7 64 bits) and Nvidia drivers (I have Quadro K420, driver version 381.22) did not solve the problem, neither reinstalling VESTA. I have used apitrace as you asked the other users previously and I am attaching the trace of a run that I simply opened vesta from the command line, and them tried opening the file in ~/Calculations/Structures/Fcc.vasp (or Hcp.vasp, I don't remember, but it is surely one of those). The program then crashed and I tried to close the window without success. Finally I just waited for it to close itself after a few minutes.

Please help, I rely on Vesta for my everyday work and this problem is really affecting my output here...

Thank you very much, arigatougosaimasu!
