The description of this group says:

VDE itself, usage tips, third-party utilities and macro packages, and links to other DOS software are available on the VDE site:

             http://sites.google.com/site/vdeeditor

However, that site appears to be down. Is there a replacement?

Google Sites has a new platform to which the VDE site would need to be
migrated. Dennis notified me several weeks ago but I haven't heard from him
since and don't know why, so we haven't discussed details. It can surely be
done, though I don't imagine the site is accessed much anymore. (It would be
nice to see data on that but there seems to be no such feature.)

The mailing list is on Google Groups and still works.

Yes, i would also favour that migration. If possible. Best, Thomas

It does appear to have been archived by the Internet Archive (archive.org), and at least one of the links works (I tested downloading VDE itself).

Thanks (also to chwolka) for suggesting the Wayback workaround for now. It
may be a couple of months before I get around to investigating the migration
issue, unless Dennis gets involved. (I hope he's all right.)

Hello Eric Meyer and other VDE folks:

If you just want a web site that will allow you to host VDE for free (zero cost) and full control over what is on the page, this site will offer that:

It offers full FTP access, WordPress, much more. The only hitch is that the site admin must log into the site at least once a month for it to remain free. I used it myself in the past.

Kind regards,
Eric Pement

There's also Neocities,

  https://neocities.org/

and given what VDE is, hosting there feels appropriate.

I'm sure there are also other viable venues to host the site, DOS themed and otherwise.

Johann

I've been very slow to decide what to do about this issue, due at first to
great reluctance to conclude that Dennis must have died last summer, and then
uncertainty about migrating the VDE site to any new platform, and the purpose
it would serve. I don't actually know why he hadn't done that yet; according
to my last email from him on 19 June, he had some concern that he wanted to
discuss with me, but was ultimately unable to.

The VDE site (including the download library) does remain fully functional in
archived form on the Wayback Machine, where anyone trying to follow the
original link today would surely look for it. I'm no longer developing VDE,
so the site required no further updates or maintenance, and in recent months
I've grown ever more sure that this is exactly how I want to leave it,
archived just as Dennis set it up. I remain grateful to him for having taken
that trouble, and wouldn't want to change a thing.

Dear Eric,

Thank you for the update.

There is also this software archive,
https://archive.org/details/vde-197 and there might also be other
things on archive.org.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone put a fansite on neocities or a
similar platform in the future, but I will probably not be personally
involved with such a project.

Best wishes,

Hi Eric,

reading your Email I understand that you actually wouldn’t want to migrate the VDE site to any other platform.

As I like VDE and estimate it as a major text creating software (after having tried literally hundreds of DOS text editors in the last years!) - I was toying with the idea to do a sort of a mirror on a domain I own. (zoon.at)

Let me know how this sounds to you, and what I might or might not include.

All best,
Thomas

Thomas,

Of course there will continue to be enthusiasts of DOS software, and you may
include any of my freeware that seems relevant to your theme or purpose. I'd
be glad to take a look at some point, and you can ask any further questions
privately.
