The last two nights Mr. Colbert has been *almost* as loopy as he was in the last show they shot in the Ed, and his coverage of Falwell came across as maybe too gleeful to be very funny.  Granted, I think if I'd mainlined the last two weeks of convention coverage, I probably would have lost my mind at some point.

With his near-giddiness at the Falwell story (to the point of chiding some of his Monday guests that he couldn't talk about it yet), and general weariness with the whole thing, I hope he gets some needed rest.

I'd guess it was a combination of two weeks of live shows, the move back to the Ed, and his utter disgust with Trump. He really went after Chris Christie tonight (as who wouldn't?).

I'm guessing that two weeks off will do him a world of good.

I think it was all that yelling by Evil Spock’s concubine on Monday night that put him off….

Did you see what happened with Jim Gaffigan? The piece calls him apolitical. He was mildly political. But Trump's bungling of the COVID-19 response grounded him when he was the top-touring comedian in America.

Just to be pedantic, doesn't Brad mean this woman?

Lt. Moreau was the captain's woman, and that was still Kirk at the end of "Mirror, Mirror."

Not that you couldn't make the case that Ms. Guilfoyle bears some resemblance to both women.

Either way, Brad can speak to this better than either of us.

My nickname for Junior is "Evil Spock," and "concubine" serves as a gentler designation for the former Mrs Newsom.

Any deeper reference to the Roddenberry universe is purely coincidental.

I watched the first two shows when he moved the show back to Broadway and the monologues were barely monologues. He wasn't preaching but he wasn't really trying to be funny either. I think, like most people, he is dealing with the strain of these times. All of the behind the scenes stuff we read and hear of about these daily talk shows relates how they keep the host grounded by keeping everything except the guests the same day after day. When the shutdown was announced in the spring Colbert turned his show into a podcast like all of the talk shows. He could deal with it because it was only temporary. Now 5 months later there's no end in sight. He's back in the Ed (office building) but there are no staff meetings and his guest interviews are still being done remotely. The stuff his guests usually plug, outside of politics, has been suspended and the live audience which usually gives the host his energy has been gone for a long time. I'm not surprised he's feeling the strain.

I thought it was a bit odd on Wednesday when he said that  he hasn’t watched that night’s “coverage”. He’s had enough of it as well.

In case anyone is interested what happened with Gaffigan, he wrote a lengthy response today. I haven't read all of it yet.

I watched this unfold on Twitter late last week, and just read his summary in FB. Really interesting, but maybe most surprising to me is his take that Trump is a good salesman. I think the opposite, he is a really bad salesman. I don’t think he persuades a single person. What he is good at is knowing how many people want the shit he is peddling, whether it is a lifestyle characterized by gold plated toilet seats, or white nationalism. He may very well win again, but if he does it won’t be because he donned or fooled or sold anyone on anything. It will be because there are still that many white nationalists in this country.

People like Gaffigan (who I like) are endearing and irritating in almost equal measure, because this late in the game he still lets himself be surprised that so many of the white people in the flyover states he is so affectionate for are hungry for the racist BS pushed by Trump.

I'd refine the salesman angle a little bit. It's not that Trump is a bad salesman. It's that he only knows one way to sell. And for the vast majority of customers, that method of salesmanship is correctly interpreted as stereotypical Jerry Lundegaard. But for just enough people, it works. Remember: Jerry gets the guy to buy the TruCoat because he knows he can't walk away.*

Almost two decades ago, I worked for a training and development company in Detroit, which meant working as a supplier for GM. I learned something from those days: dealerships knew they had lousy sales staff. They knew they had too many Jerry Ludegaards. But they sold just enough cars in the month that the dealerships couldn't risk getting rid of them, because the numbers were still there. They couldn't risk getting rid of someone who was a mediocre salesperson at the risk of landing someone who had no sales skills at all. And to make matters worse, the sales guy (it's always a guy) thought he knew *everything*, so trying to train Dingus McGee was a waste of training.

* The last time I bought a car four years ago, I made the critical mistake of bringing my wife and kid to the closing. Sure enough, the dealership pulled a fast one (well, we sold the car you were looking for, but we have this model instead), and I wanted to walk away. Well, she couldn't walk away, because she had "made peace" with getting rid of the old car, and while we didn't get screwed, I was displeased.

So, maybe we are saying the same thing here, or something similar.

When a Toyota salesman sells a lot of RAV4s, it does not necessarily mean he is a good salesman, since it is the most popular SVU in America. A lot of Americans want that vehicle, and will buy it regardless of how good or bad the salesman is.

Trump is selling White Nationalism. A lot of Americans (close to half, we will see in 2 months if close enough to win the electoral college again) want White Nationalism. They are not being persuaded to buy it because Trump is a super salesman who can make something ugly and toxic look shiny and desirable (which is what I think Gaffigan is saying). They are buying what they have always wanted.

I dissent. Certainly there is a large group of Trump supporters who are white nationalists. More than I realized in 2016.
But most have drunk deeply from the Kool Aid offered by FOX News and right wing radio. They believe Joe Biden is a socialist, that Hillary Clinton and Hollywood are involved in sex trafficking and that the deaths at Benghazi are more significant than Americans killed by COVID-19.

So, to clear up any possible misunderstanding, the underlined three letters below are a typo, not an attempt to make this thread more TV-related. The RAV4 is the most popular sports utility vehicle in America, not Law and Order franchise...

In her later years my mother tended to do the opposite, i.e. call the TV series in question "SUV."

I definitely don't consider this to be an auto-correct issue... :-/

So, as with the Spider-Mobile (or Thanos’s helicopter), Hargitay may soon be calling for the SVU SUV?
