I just upgraded my Linux machine to Ubuntu 16 and now I cannot install Trelby!

Help! I'm a writer and I desperately need screenwriting software. My big break is imminent! ;)

Any help is welcome.

I'm having this problem, also. I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04, and there are missing dependencies that can't be reconciled when trying to install the .deb package from the website. One user said that a fix had been made to the source, but it hasn't been packaged yet (not sure if this is the case -- correct me if I'm wrong).

If he's right, is there any chance that .deb packages for Ubuntu 16.04 could be made and posted on the website? I'm not a developer or a coder, otherwise I would try to package it myself.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are having the same problem here at our production company. Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on ASUS getting a Python 2.8 dependency Omission on install from site using Ubuntu Installer Utility. Osku: Can the corrected version of Trelby 2.3 be uploaded to replace the current one referenced by the download Ubuntu Linux Link which generates this problem and prevents users from using your software package? Thanks. Walls.

Well I ran through a step-by-step compiling process on another thread, with a few troubleshooting attempts. Seemed to work: I installed the .deb package and it opens up. You're all welcome to the .deb file I created (see attached file). I do not guarantee anything, since I'm not a developer, and I'm not responsible for any issues that arise. Install at your own risk.

Just had to say that to CYA. :) But it seems like it's working fine. Should work for Ubuntu 16.04 and Mint 18.

Cheers!

You need Python 2.8 libraries.  Start here but I warn you, there are several you need to download and install in proper order:
Every time you get one library you'll find you need another.

Trebly needs a PPA. Right-click on downloaded file for Ubuntu or Fedora and install with OS installer utility listed on context-sensitive menu. WJ

"OS installer utility listed on context-sensitive menu." no idea what that means. I mean I know OS = Operating System, which I have Ubuntu 16.04.  But from there I'm lost.

"Right-click on downloaded file for Ubuntu or Fedora " Which file? What do you mean? I have been using an install I found online for hours and after I edit nano Makefile & nano debian/control, I keep hitting a "Makefile:1: *** missing separator.  Stop." error after I try to 'make deb'

Download .deb and use Install using "installer-name" option on/for that file. Right-clicking anything on Win or Linux brings up a context-sensitive menu that holds anything that can be done with that type of file, hence it's name "context sensitive menu." WJ

OK. I think I uderstand what you mean. So you are saying install .deb files via right click?

I did and there is no one 'deb installer' as far as I can tell?

It might help if I understood what a deb was?

I found these instructions useful and now use Trelby with no problem. Oh, one quick tip: If you are new to Trelby, I'd recommend installing Courier for FInal Draft and use that as your default font. I don't have the rationale for that handy, but it works and will help with compatibility issues, I believe.

For the Trelby install, you'll need to update Python:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/785399/trelby-not-installing-in-16-04#925407 =

I had the same dependency problem with the .deb package on Ubuntu 17.04, but installing Trelby from source was fairly simple.

  1. Install python-lxml and python-wxgtk3.0 from the repository:

    sudo apt install python-lxml python-wxgtk3.0

  2. Download and extract the Zip file or clone the Git repository. Example:

    sudo apt install git
    git clone https://github.com/oskusalerma/trelby.git
    cd trelby

  3. Navigate to the trelby folder and enter:

    sudo python setup.py install

Done, you can now type, or add a shortcut pointing to, /opt/trelby/bin/trelby to start Trelby

This worked!!

Wow thanks.

What a weird command "/opt/trelby/bin/trelby" is to execute the program. To me it is anyway. But yay! Now I can edit this screenplay!
