I've been browsing the source code on and off for the last couple of days trying to figure out
how to fix the small text problem on Mac OS X.
I'm forking off of the "official repos" https://github.com/oskusalerma/trelby/
to isolate my changes.

I'm attempting to add a zoom/re-scaling control to the view modes so that I can view files
more comfortably.

Is this potential patch likely or unlikely to be accepted into the code base?

And what considerations would I have to account for to make it more likely to be accepted?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't follow, on two accounts.

1) We don't have mac os x support at all, so how exactly are you running it?

2) The fonts used are already completely configurable by the user, so if you want bigger fonts, you just select bigger fonts. So I don't understand what you're trying to solve?

Hi Anil ~ what do you think the chances are of a zoom/scaling feature on the horizon.
While I can change the font size and then change it back for printing the amount of zooming
depends greatly on where I am writing and whether I have my glasses on or not etc.
Being able to scroll zoom would be a major plus and is something I have used often in other screenwriting software.

Cheers!

Why would you need to change it for printing? The display font size and printing font size are completely independent.

I've come here specifically looking for any way of zooming in on the editor. It is completely useless to me, unless I lean forward and use a magnifying glass to view the buttons and text...

Hi Osku ~ changing the font size isn't the only consideration. Scaling the entire writing interface is extremely helpful for vision impaired people.
An example of the functionality can be found in Open Office Writer:

If somebody implements such a feature I'd be happy to include it.

This is what it looks like on Windows 8.1, with a 23 inch monitor. Which is why I'm uninstalling.

Have to confess I don't see any problems with that screenshot.

That sounds fair. As a programmer myself for many years I understand that scope creep is a big issue.

I certainly am grateful for the fine work being done here. The project looks to be written in python which
I have not worked with but may be able to make headway in. Like the other gentleman I may have
to continue using the other program (MovieDraft) for the time being which, while lacking features I find in Trelby
does allow me to create a more comfortable work environment.

Either way though, great work! I definitely appreciate what you guys are doing!

Cheers

Really? Because I can barely see the buttons and without squinting I can't see what i'm typing either.

You can increase the font size of the actual screenplay already, so that's already solved. The buttons you don't even need, there's nothing there that's not also available in either the menus or through keyboard shortcuts.

Oh I'm sorry, I don't know all the keyboard shortcuts for software I haven't used before. And using bigger fonts on the same size tiny scrap of paper is a ridiculous "solution" - just let us make the "paper" big enough to comfortable see it. I can do that with Word, I can do that with my browser, I can do that with Movie Draft.

Computer monitors are landscape and around 20 inches wide or more because our eyes are horizontal to each other, not vertical, and because we don't like leaning over the desk to see our own typing... A thin white ribbon in the middle of my screen is utterly useless to me. I write for a living and no, I'm not going to adapt to the tool; I need a tool that works comfortably. I'd rather just use Word, because I don't have a 65 inch monitor.

You complain about the fonts being too small and don't bother even trying to increase the font size? I don't get what you're hoping to achieve here.

The paper size shown obviously scales with the font size used, which you would have noticed if you had actually tried to do something about your problem instead of just complaining about it.

I DID try increasing the font size, just ended up with a bigger font on the same skinny ribbon.

All I'm trying to achieve is get those able to fix it to recognise that there is a problem, especially for Windows 8 users. For me it is irrelevant now, as I uninstalled the software last night.

See attached screenshot. Increased font size, bigger paper size. There is no problem other than you apparently unable to adjust the settings.

Ah, my apologies; I see the problem. There are TWO "settings". I looked at "View" which didn't help, looked under "Edit", didn't help, then found "Settings" under the "Script" menu. I tried changing the "Script font" and it actually made the situation worse. You've gone under "File", then "Settings" in there... Interesting.

For fun n giggles I've just opened 10 desktop programs to see where the settings or options would normally be. 6 of them were under "Edit", 2 had "Tools" one had "Options" as a header button. Only one had it under "File", so it's not me being silly, especially since I had already apparently found the "Settings" menu.

Consider further that it makes no sense that the menu for the script should be 'wrong' for changing the program options but the one for the "file" actually changes the program option, and NOT the file settings!

Hopefully my confusion will be helpful feedback?

Chapter 5 of the manual clearly explains the different settings and the rationale for why things are the way they are. Comparing to other programs is useless as long as the other programs are much more restrictive than Trelby is (only one set of settings allowed, no requirement to maintain 100% identical output from same source file forever, etc).

This is what we are looking for, a zoom page tool anywhere just to help us resize the page from a single line to the entire script. even if it looks small it helps with the getting around.

Great job, it is a great program, I set my hotkeys and it responds fast.

nice.

Thanks
