Engine room insulation

Hello everyone,

I am looking at replacing the engine room insulation on our 1992 48, El Guapo. The insulation is in pretty bad shape and missing in several spots.  Pretty sure it is the original stuff.  Does anyone have any recommendations on a product to replace the old insulation?  There are lots of options and price ranges available.  Any comments are appreciated.

I have a 1965 Voyager and need the same thing. I am anxious to see the response!! Great post!

Hello -

I'm on a similar journey with our 48. I've replaced the insulation in the 3 removable panels on the salon floor with this product - Sound Insulation - Vinyl Foam Barrier Composite - Soundtec | Fisheries Supply. The old stuff, if you have what we have, was largely disintegrating into black powder that was falling onto the engines underway. Our 48 is notably older, however, so you may have a more modern product in your '92. The insulation that was up against the fuel tanks is gone now so we are considering what to replace it with and whether to continue with the Soundtec product. Leaning that way. I did not purchase the version with the adhesive but used a 3M spray adhesive instead. My priority was the three panels due to the falling powder so not sure if I will prioritize the rest this winter or not.

Sound down in good stuff. Expensive.  I heard some use glue plus SS washers on the underside.  Then foil tape.  I will likely go with the glue backing plus SS screws and fender washers.

Many years ago we had Modutec in Tacoma replace the insulation in our engine room.  A friend did his 48’ Tolly, and I thought I could do it too until I tried pulling out just a very little bit of the old insulation.  It was a horrible gummy mess.  I can’t remember what the insulation is, but it still is in very good condition.  It’s held down with something about the diameter of a quarter.

Great info.  Yes my insulation is basically crumbling into powder every time it is touched.  It is a real nuisance when trying to get something done.  It sounds like the same as yours, blackish powder.  My fuel tanks have lost all insulation so those will be done eventually once I get the engine room ceiling done.  The aft and forward bulkheads need to be done also but will be more difficult with 30 years worth of wire, hose etc. running over them.  I will look into the suggestions.

Hello all

I’m in the same boat so to speak! I’ve got a 1991 Tolly 57’ wide body that the engine room ceiling is falling down and creating a mess. 

I’m replacing it with a 1” thick panel’s of polystyrene foam insulation with what looks like a very thin metal facing on both sides the panels measure 1” X 24” X 48”. I had to buy a whole box of them ( I think about a dozen or so) they aren’t cheap but it is what was recommended to me. 

This is my ceiling with some old, some new and some in the process of being replaced.

I believe I bought them from Amazon but the number and website are 1-877-470-9991 and www.amvicsystem.com  

The black is the old insulation that has partially fallen down. The shiny stuff with the fender washers is the knew stuff. 
The plastic tarp is protecting my engine.

Hi Kevin, 

Have you noticed any difference in sound using the Polystyrene?  I know that Sounddown is very expensive and has a rubber section within the engine room insulation.  It looks like you cut to size.  Then wrapped foil tape on the edges?  Yes...

Hello John

I just put those up on the ceiling yesterday and haven’t run the boat yet. We should be taking her out this weekend so I can report back. I haven’t wrapped the edges in tape but that is a great idea. Thanks. 

I had limited amount of the polystyrene insulation here on the boat to work with, the rest of it in storage and I’ll be getting that next week so I won’t be finishing the engine room till then.
