Is there any free software to allow students with an nSpire CX CAS to view a .tns file? Or must they get the TI student software to do this? I have been
searching the web but come up empty handed? Thank you.

There used to be - I’m not sure why it was discontinued but I know there were operating system issues.

Actually, there is a 30-day trial available if that limited time frame will work:

Although the user cannot view a file, he can save it and make screenshots with ComputerLink.

Thank you everyone for your excellent responses. I very much appreciate it.
I suppose we will suggest the 30-day trial route to students who cannot afford the software.
Best Wishes to all.  Earl

Let me look into this I believe you can find emulators for free on the web. I'll get back to you as soon as I can but right now storms have knocked out all the power where I live and not looking like it will be back on till tomorrow.

Re: … emulators for free

Any emulators that are not TI products are illegal.

Hi All
for the past 5 months I have been working on some activities using codes
and ciphers for the TI NSPIRE

I have created some simple programs, with input and help from many others.
Here are the first two tns files along with the activities I plan to run
with them.
feedback on the documentation would be great.
I am not sure how much detail I need to put in with the coding part.

cheers Jody

Sorry to interfere, but you can't say that emulators are illegal unless you don't understand at all what an emulator really is.

So there is Firebird for example, which is totally legal :

But it's a tool tailored for developers, and so are other third party Nspire emulators.
If the goal is to open .tns documents, yes it's going to work, but it'll require more less intuitive steps for each to be performed for each .tns file.
The TI-Nspire Student/Teacher software is by far the best for this.

Years ago, we had a free online Java applet tns player by TI :
But I don't know if it's sill supported.

Of course third-party emulators aren't illegal ;)
TI has however made ROM-sharing websites shut down in the past, since that is not allowed (see the epsstore link below), for instance TI-Emulation a few years ago.
More info from TI themselves, regarding ROM dumping (and thus linked to emulation): https://epsstore.ti.com/OA_HTML/csksxvm.jsp?nSetId=137231

The only thing I suppose John could have misinterpreted is the following sentence, present in the 84+CE OSes license for instance (but not in the Nspire OSes one): "YOU MAY NOT USE THE LICENSED MATERIALS ON ANY EMULATOR OF A TI CALCULATOR UNLESS THE EMULATOR IS OBTAINED FROM TI." And this is not even a problem since you need a ROM from your own calculator, not an OS file.

Quick reminder of what exists (just one example per category, there are more):
- WabbitEmu for the z80 (82/83/84 (non CE)) is quite popular, and has Windows and Mac versions (and I believe it works under Wine on Linux)
- Firebird for the TI-Nspire (CX) series, works natively on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android
- CEmu for the CE (84+CE/83PCE), works natively on Windows, Mac, Linux.
For all those, you'll need to dump the ROM from your own device (the readme files or equivalent will tell you how).

Anyway, as others have noted, nothing official except the TI-Nspire Computer Software and Linking Software (though that won't open .tns files, just do transfers and screenshots) ; but there are free demos, so you may be interested in trying that.

Have fun,
Adrien

( Ah, and yes, Xavier's mention of TI's online Nspire document player is a good answer but indeed it hasn't been supported for a while now (and doesn't have any keyboard support) :( )

Yes, the correct website appears to be https://wabbit.codeplex.com/
