Hello all.

As I'm sure many android users know Firfox on android (and possible other platforms) recently started blocking unsigned addons.

TiddlyWiki requires an addon to write to the file system . On the desktop this is signed and approved by Firfox, the 'android' version is not.

To enable the addon to work you need to switch a setting.
In your browser go to :

about:config

and then search for the

xpinstall.signatures.required

setting, toggle this from  false to true. Now your tiddlyfox mobile addon should be working.

If not go to the addons page, and toggle it from dissabled to enabled (yes the old turn it off then turn it on again), which will force FF to do a restart.

Tiddly wiki in your browser should start working again.

Yipee.

Ok some more news after a quick search.

FF do plan to remove this setting in future versions of FF, however, if the tiddlyfox extension is not able tobe signed before then there is an other option.

Developpers will have access to an unbranded version , where the setting will still be available.

It would seem like a good idea to release this as a TiddlyWiki editor version (I've tried And TidWiki, and it permanently crashes on my tablet !

Hre is alink to the page on the nmozzila wiki.
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Add-ons/Extension_Signing

hope this is helpfull to people.

David.

Hi David

Thanks for your research on this, especially since I don’t have regular access to an Android device for testing.

TiddlyWiki requires an addon to write to the file system . On the desktop this is signed and approved by Firfox, the 'android' version is not.

My understanding was that the addon is signed by Mozilla as part of the AMO process. I hadn’t realised that that wasn’t the case. Do other addons have this same problem? Perhaps I’m missing a step in uploading the extension.

Best wishes

Jeremy.

jeremy,

I think the problem is particularly with the extension on the android platform. I cant be sure for desktop as I run Debian / IceWeasel, which is always a little bit behind the main FF release.

However if you follow the docs on mozilla, it sounds as though getting the andriod  extension signed shouldn't be a big issue.

I was thinking about sending it in myself, but I'm rather busy at the moment (breaking the house... ... again !).

I just felt sure that the info would be useful to someone else, so decided I should post it.

Hi David

However if you follow the docs on mozilla, it sounds as though getting the andriod  extension signed shouldn't be a big issue.

I did a bit more poking around, and found this article that says that add-ons distributed via AMO are automatically signed:

It includes the statement:

> All Firefox extensions - for Desktop and Android - on AMO that have passed review are now signed.

The listing for TiddlyFox on AMO also suggests that it is signed (see screenshot below)

So, now I’m pretty confused:

* Why isn't the Android version of the extension isn’t signed while the desktop version is? There is actually only one extension used on both platforms
* What can I do to rectify the situation? All the docs say that the signing happens automatically

Any help gratefully received on this,

Best wishes

Jeremy

Jeremy,

Well that does does sound strange ?

I feel very confused here too ?

I amusing FF 'beta' on my android, (not sure what the 'beta' means...). All I know is that up until the wekend (when I changed my config setting) tiddlywiki wasn't saving to the file it was re-downloading the whole thing. which was a bit annoying.

Maybe I'm still using an 'old' version of tiddlyfox that hasn't been signed... At some point I will re-test ~ remove the current tiddlyfox, re-download a new one... etc etc..

I'll get back to you once I've had a chance to do so.

Aslo I thought that the extension on  Android was special (or different) I recall needing to use an 'xpi' file for the extension and downloading it all separately (an andoid issue I seem to recall ?) anyway, when I get around to retesting I'll be able to tell you better.

Hi David & Jeremy,

I am using an old Nexus 7 (2012 version) with a special Android version (Slim-4.4.4 since the Nexus became unusable with newer 'standard' Android versions).
It uses Firefox v45.0.2. I searched for TiddlyFox and could install it by just clicking a button (I vaguely remember it was more difficult in the past as David wrote). The TiddlyFox add-on 1.0alpha18.1 is signed and works.

Hope that helps,

Ton

Hello again all,

I begin to wonder if this isn't an issue with my 3 year old tablet that refuse to update to a newer version of android ... that or it could be the big crack across the screen (results in only half the screen responding to touch input).

;)
