Hi all,

I had a little time to breathe, so I started a tutorial for TW5. It is only a modest beginning (two slide shows at 8 tiddlers each), and will take several weeks to do well, but for what it is worth, it will give you a taste of what is to come.

Jeremy, feel free to swipe any and all of this and adapt it as it suits you.

Hi Dave,

Good start.
Many newcomers need it (they already asked a few times for a "TiddlyWiki for the rest of us" type introduction).

I did have a look at your stylesheet and saw you are (still) using the triple backticks to make the stylesheet 'readable'.
I used this as well, but triple backticks are not allowed according to the gurus, see discussion at [1]
Instead you ought to set the type to 'text/css' (manually since it is not in the list).

BUT BE AWARE, the type 'text/css' gives problems at the moment, see [2] and the issue at [3].
In the meantime you can use the type 'text/plain'.

Cheers,

Ton

Dave,
I really like the collection of slides approach and the table of contents, the arrows and  'tag pills'

Good work!

This is awesome. The community really need this. Thank you very much. This will be definitively my recommendation for every newcomer.

Just one thing, not related with your particular TW but with zoom view. In mobile devices when you click the Next button the view stands at the bottom of the page. Because this maybe you will not notice that you have changed the slide.

Hi David,

It's a perfect introduction to TW for newbies. Very simple, clear and well written.

Your guides, tutorials and other TW stuff have always been a reference point for me.

Thanks!

Alberto

Great Stuff Dave, it's looking very good. I do think this level of material would be very useful on tiddlywiki.com, thank you. Let me know when you've reached the point where you'd be happy for me to lift and shift it.

Sorry for the confusion. The recommendation is NOT that you use text/css for ALL stylesheets. You can choose to use it for stylesheets that don't incorporate any wikitext features (transclusion and macros) - for those that do, you should continue to use the normal wikitext type. If you are working with wikitext stylesheets then it absolutely does make sense to use triple brackets to avoid areas being unintentionally wikified. The value of using text/css is that you avoid accidental wikification.

Best wishes

Jeremy

Hi everyone, thanks for the kind words. I will plug away little by little as I have time and energy. Got quite a few projects going on at the same time...

Hi all,

I added a new section to TiddlyQuickly:

Adjusting the appearance and layout of TiddlyWiki

It has 13 slides and covers the following:
  • Change the title, subtitle, and default tiddlers for your TiddlyWiki
  • Change the theme of your TiddlyWiki
  • Tweak the theme of your TiddlyWiki
  • Change the story view of your TiddlyWiki
  • Adjust the animation speed of your TiddlyWiki
  • Add or remove elements from tiddlers and the sidebar

I also switched to the classic story view, and changed the animations back to 400, in response to Danielo's comment here about zoomin view.

Why not make in the toc-like slide 1 of those tiddlers the list elements be links to the appropriate slides?

Good idea. When I get back to TQ I will do that.

TiddlyQuickly (http://giffmex.org/TiddlyQuickly.html) now has a new tutorial: Creating, navigating and searching tiddlers. 13 slides in all. Enjoy, newbies!

Hello Dave,

thanks for providing the TiddlyQuickly. I think it's helpful and fun reading even for ex-newbies.

I have a suggestion: Most of the sliders fit on an average screen, so no scrolling is needed most of the time.
Since they're different in size, you still have to move the mouse to hit the "next" arrow when reading them in sequence.
That wouldn't be necessary if the navigation bar would be on top of the tiddlers.
But then, one could skip the tiddler parts for which he would have to scroll.
Well, dunno. Maybe you should keep the current location for pedagogical reasons.
What do you think?

Hello UBi
What about the mobile screens? In my mobile I have to scroll down most of the time. Then when I finish I just click next. With your suggestion I have to scroll down to read the article and then scroll up again just to go to the next slide.
Personally I like how it is now.

Hi Ubi and Danielo, yes, I thought about that. I wish I could have kept each slide short enough to make it all fit. I wish it were as easy as hitting the advance button in a PowerPoint. But some content needed to be longer.

Danielo's comment makes me think I made the right decision, despite my lack of satisfaction with having to scroll down. My problem with putting the arrows at the top is that I like seeing as much content as possible without scrolling, so tall headers (like on many Wordpress blogs, and TW classic) are a pet peeve of mine. So I think I will stick with it. Thanks guys for your input!

David:

Just a suggestion about a possible compromise for this design issue ... It might be effective to use "zoomin" with an animation time of 0.

Regards,
Hans

Hi Hans! Actually, that is how it started out, as zoomin with time of 0. That is how I have all my personal TW5s configured. And, that is how you would think a slideshow type sequence should go. But people were saying that when reading on a mobile device and advancing to the next slide, they couldn't always tell if the slide had advanced, because the bottom of the tiddlers all look the same. So I decided to switch to classic view mode.

At any rate, zoomin doesn't resolve the scrolling up or down issue. The tiddlers are the same height no matter what the view mode is. The only thing I could do would be to reduce the amount of content on each slide so that all of them fit in a typical screen. I think I will stick to classic, as it is the closest to the default of the application I am "tutorialing" about. Blessings!

Hi David:

Thanks for the additional details.  I'll bear them in mind when I start working on the smaller form factors of mobile devices.  So far, I'm still primarily focusing on optimizing my Name conventions for this new Tw5 environment.  It's taking me a lot longer to really appreciate how to optimize the interactions among my Tags, Fields and Lists than I expected.

Cheers,
Hans
