I'm in the mood for chest waders.  I know they come in different weights.  Seems you can wade 4MR all year round, and if you wade anywhere else local it most likely will be in the warmer months.

Anyone have advice on what weight or material is best?

Look forward to your answers.

Cheers

I'd say get lightweight breathable ones. You can always wear warm clothes underneath.

Simms - I cycle 2-3 sets of Simms waders so I can patch one set while using another, and also account for one set possibly being repaired or replaced by the company in Montana.  The ones I wore yesterday and today have almost as much aquaseal as wader material -- a result of small stream enthusiasm.

BTW -- these "wader wash stations".  Can someone explain how beer cans and leaves are to be utilized to clean my boots?

I've got a free pair of boot foot non breathable if you want. I'll bring to beer tie. Need a good portion of goop along heel. Mens 11. Frog Togg.

Good point on wader wash stations - I think the original idea was to avoid bringing in rock snot and whirling disease etc. But if they're not being maintained....meh. It might be old news but no more felt soles in MD - that sucks.

So rubber soles probably the best wader boot options in these parts?

It does suck -- studded felt is the best IMO.  I don't care what anyone says, felt helps in certain areas.  Studs alone are decent, and plain rubber is a hip replacement.

Knowing Maryland, it's probably a "We don't really have a clear understanding of things, but we'll go ahead and throw this __ at it to try to appease people and make it seem as if we're doing something very cerebral".  I've never seen a single wash station in person that is actually functional in the entire state (Funpowder, Beav, Savage, BHC), suggesting to me that it clearly isn't a priority.  Most of them are so buried in debris it isn't immediately evident that there is anything even under the sign.  Some of the ones at Funpowder will be frozen solid by this evening.

People are strange, so it's best to avoid them by fishing small streams ;).

Where are you fishing?  The only place I fish with the plain rubber soles is here locally where the sediment gives you all the  traction you need ;).

I will not fish a single trout stream without felt or studs, period.

I prefer korkers with the removable soles.  I beat them to death in a few months with hiking into small streams and not caring for them in any way whatsoever....but consider it like replacing tippet (expendable).

I've asked the PA's F&BC rangers the last few years at the Lancaster show whether or not PA was going to ban felt - each time the answer is "we have no plans to do so." I hope it stays that way.

I heard recently that PA decided not to ban felt as they determined that the laces stay wet just as long as the felt. And harbor just as may nasties.

I have no evidence to back this up, though.

Anyone have more info about that?

No one does -- that's the catch.  Not that fly fishermen care about that sort of thing as it relates to other practices.

I do have some great evidence of knee and hip injury due to slippage from rubber soles though. ;)

Lots of brands out there.  For this area, I definitely recommend breathable and not neoprene.  I own (have owned) Orvis supersonics ad LL Bean waders.  Both have worked well and have good customer service.  I have rented Redingtons and Simms.  I have to say, the Simms were my favorite with the Redington's a close second.  If you have the money, I recommend the new zip front--makes peeing much easier.  As for wading boots, by rubber bottoms not felt.  Many states are now making felt illegal.  I have a pair of the Simms Vaportread.  Tread is great--I fish the gundpoweder, Savage, NB, etc with no studs.  However, the boot how worn out fast.  I had a LLBean boot that lasted much longer.  You can add studs to any rubber bottom boot.

I love Simms waders (especially the G3s) but am not a fan of their wading boots.  I bought my first pair of them over the summer and will get something else once they go.  In general not a fan of wading boots that you tie like normal shoelaces.  Have always been a fan of Chota for wading boots.

Have never felt the need for studs anywhere but alot of people won't go without them.

I'm with you, Gene, Vibram just isn't as good as felt. If you ask me you have to add studs to Vibram soles.

Seriously though buy the most durable waders you can afford. I can't say I've heard of a lousy pair of waders.

Per soles, I'll stopped wearing felt after slipping down a wooden staircase in RMNP. I took one step and it was like wearing ice skates. My wife found me at the bottom like this

Korkers Devils Canyon are my jam. Rubber with studs.

I've taken one bad spill in felts in the SNP from a mossy rock, and sometimes wet leaves are problematic.  Overall though, I'll take....well, in this order if I can choose --

Felt + studs
Rubber + studs
Felt

Rubber

By all means though, try some types and see what suits you best.  Whatever keeps you upright and fishing ;).

Only Simms for me. I've tried Orvis or cheap brands didn't work as well as G3 . If this is something that you can afford I would definitely recommend that . As far as boots since felts are illegal in Maryland just take vibram and studs.
