Android App for ThinkUp

Hi,

I am Rahul Teja pursuing my graduation in Computer Science Engineering 3rd Year form Delhi, India. I was going through GSoc14 project ideas and came across Android app for ThinkUp. I am interested in contributing for this project. I have a good experience in Java,Android App Development,HTML,CSS,PHP. Is this project up for this year ?

I have done my GSoC 14 project integrating Bootstrap framework with an open-source project, CiviCRM. I have been working on Java and Android app development from last 8-10 months and created few test apps.

Hi Rahul,

We're just figuring out now whether or not ThinkUp will apply for GSoC 2015, and if so, who the mentor(s) will be - and of course we don't know yet whether or not ThinkUp will be accepted.

That said, we're definitely interested in an Android app that pushes ThinkUp insights to users. Ultimately will be up to the mentors for this year's program what project they want to work on, but there's a good possibility the Android app will be one.

Hi Gina

Glad to know that ThinkUp has decided to apply for GSoC 2015. Keeping my fingers crossed about being accepted as a mentoring organization! 

Meanwhile, I have been going through the ideas posted on GitHub. Two of them caught my interest - ThinkUp Android app and Migration to Smarty 3. Migration to Smarty 3 feels like home turf as I have extensively worked with Smarty templates during my GSoC 2014 project(integrated Bootstrap framework with CiviCRM which uses PHP and Smarty framework). Android app on the other hand is exciting as I get to learn a lot of new stuff!

Can you help me by throwing light on below points to help make a decision:

1. What will be the milestones/targets for the Android app. Has any work like ideas on app design etc. been done on this idea?

2. If I apply for Migration to Smarty 3 project, how else can I contribute to the ThinkUp code base to make my proposal competitive?

3. I have a keen interest in UI/UX design and development. Are there any ideas in that area that I can pursue and develop?

This will immensely help in arriving at a decision and starting work on the platform.

No work has been done on this idea yet, this would be a completely fresh new repository. Great opportunity.

No milestones or targets are defined yet. We'd expect a working app available in the Play Store by the end of the summer, but up to student/mentor team to decide what "working app" entails.

Check out ThinkUp's list of open issues and see if there is anything there you can help out with, even if it's documentation updates. Students who have had a pull request accepted to the project before we review their application will certainly distinguish themselves.

Up to you. Have you tried ThinkUp? What do you think? What new features or fixes in that area do you think it needs?

GSoC is a community-driven collaborative program vs a top-down, "we tell you what to do" scenario, so we're all ears.
